A great way to help explain a new baby to a child is with the use of some children’s books about pregnancy.
And luckily for us parents, there are some fantastic books that have been written about pregnancy and birthing. Or to put it your child’s words… books about how babies grow and how babies come out.
You might have a toddler who doesn’t quite understand what having a new baby might mean. Or a preschooler who wants to know what the baby is eating. Or a middle schooler who wants to know all the technical details of birthing. LOL, lucky you 😉
If you are unsure about how to start talking about this topic, you can read this article to learn more about how to start explaining where babies come from.
If you are wanting some more specific guidance, then my book Let’s Talk About Sex: How To Get Started And What To Say To Your Child About Sex, will help you to get started.
There are a lot of books that talk about pregnancy and birthing.
Some of them are older (but still very popular) and only talk about vaginal births, whereas others will also talk about caesarean births and even surrogacy or adoption.
Some of them are very diversity-friendly and don’t make the assumption that a child’s parents are a male and a female (or a man and a woman).
You will find two types of books listed here.
The books in this list, primarily talk about pregnancy and birthing. These are a great choice if you are expecting a baby or if your child is very curious about the subject. Many of the sex talk books also talk about pregnancy and birthing (in lesser detail).
You will only find books in this list that are readily available at bookshops today.
You can find more books about different topics in the main list of Sex Education Books for Children.
And if you find this list a little overwhelming, you might want to look at the age-appropriate list of sex education books.
You’ll find more information about sex education in my Sex Education 101 page.
NOTE: Before passing any book to your child or reading the book with your child, you should read it yourself first. I might think it is a great book for a certain age child or that the information is valuable, but you may disagree. You need to choose books that reflect your values and the messages you want your child to receive.
