Consent by Jayneen Sanders (Little Big Chats)

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Consent: Introducing consent and body boundaries by Jayneen Sanders (Little Big Chats) is a lovely little book for introducing the topic of consent and a child’s right to their own personal space.  Teaching children about body boundaries is crucial to a child’s growing sense of self, their confidence and how they should expect to be treated by others

This book belongs to the Little BIG Chats series, which consists of 12 books that have been written to help parents to start talking about important topics. There’s a discussion guide at the back, with some pages of the book including helpful questions to ask your child as you read.

I really like this approach of a topic a book, and they would be a fantastic collection of books to have. It would be very easy to read a different one of these each night with your children.

There are 12 books in the Little BIG Chats series:

The Body Safety titles should ideally be read in the following order: Consent, My Safety Network, My Early Warning Signs, Private Parts are Private, and Secrets and Surprises. The remaining titles can be read in any order.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hakanson, your friendly Sex Ed Rescue guide. Today, I want to share a fantastic book with you that’s perfect for teaching young children about consent.

This little gem is part of a series called Little Big Chats, which is all about tackling big topics in a kid-friendly way. The book we’re talking about today is called Consent, written by Janine Sanders. It’s so new that the pages are a bit sticky, but don’t worry, that won’t stop us from diving in!

First off, the book gives you some handy tips on how to use it and why it’s important. Then we meet Theodore, who’s learning all about consent. Theodore’s body is their own, and they’re the boss of it. We learn about body boundaries, which are like invisible personal space bubbles. No one should cross those boundaries without permission.

The book emphasizes the importance of asking for permission, like when you want to give someone a hug. Sometimes, we might feel like giving a hug or a kiss, and other times, we might not, and that’s totally okay. It’s all about consent, which means respecting each other’s choices.

By the end of the book, we understand that our bodies belong to us, and we have the power to say yes or no to anyone who wants to come into our body boundaries. We’re in charge!

And guess what? There are even discussion questions at the back of the book to help you have meaningful conversations with your little ones.

In a nutshell, this book is a simple and wonderful tool for teaching kids about body boundaries and consent. It’s a must-have for any parent or caregiver who wants to make these important topics easy to understand.

So go ahead and grab a copy of Consent from the Little Big Chats series. Your kids will thank you for it!
