Girlology: There’s Something New About You by Melissa Holmes & Trish Hutchison

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Girlology: There’s Something New About You by Melissa Holmes & Trish Hutchison is one of the few books that teaches girls about puberty through the telling of a story.

This book is a puberty book for tweens that covers a diverse range of topics. The authors use some lovely stories about a group of girls who are growing up. So they tell a short story eg your first period, and then provide information on what a period is and how to manage it. The book talks about all the physical, emotional and social changes that happen during puberty.

Sexual intercourse is NOT talked about in this book.

Ideal Age

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak from Sex Ed Rescue, and I wanted to share my thoughts on a great book for young girls about puberty. It’s called Girlology, written by Melissa Holmes and Trish Hutchinson, who are both doctors. I really like the way they write, and these books are fantastic!

Now, I have to admit, I haven’t gotten my hands on the latest version yet because I have to pay for shipping to get them here in Australia. But the one I borrowed from the library is from 2010, so it’s a bit outdated. However, I know they have updated it, so there’s a newer version out there.

You can definitely tell that the authors are doctors because they have a clinical background, which makes their writing practical and informative. These books are a great alternative to the popular American Girl books, although they might not be as well-known. They deserve more recognition!

What I love about these books is that they tell the stories of different girls going through puberty. It’s relatable and engaging. The first book focuses on puberty and doesn’t dive into sex just yet. It covers topics like growing up, liking boys (or girls), periods, tampons, bras, and more. It’s filled with helpful information and cute drawings.

I haven’t read the second book yet, but I did read the third one, which tackles more mature topics like sex and consent. It’s great that these books grow with the girls and address their changing needs.

I think these books are suitable for girls around the ages of 9 to 12. They might be a bit too advanced for 8-year-olds, but 9-year-olds and older will find them interesting. The stories make learning about puberty fun and engaging. Plus, reading stories has always been a great way to learn, right?

So, if you’re looking for an alternative to the American Girl books, I highly recommend checking out the Girlology series. They’re informative, relatable, and a great resource for young girls. Cheers!
