Let’s Talk About the Birds and the Bees by Molly Potter

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Let’s Talk About the Birds and the Bees: Starting conversations about the facts of life (From how babies are made to puberty and healthy relationships) by Molly Potter is a comprehensive look at sex education for children.

This book is fantastic and literally covers everything a child needs to know about the birds and bees. At the back, it has tips for parents and even addresses some of the fears that parents have about talking to their kids about sex. It covers gender differences, the private body parts, what private means, what touching is okay, puberty, how babies are made, sexual intercourse love and much more. The author provides kids with the facts and doesn’t overwhelm them with unnecessary details.

If you just want the one book that covers everything, then this is the book to have. It doesn’t have the details of the bigger Robie Harris books, but it is simple and gets straight to the point in an age-appropriate way. And I would have to say, it is one of my favourite books and is one I recommend to parents all the time.

The penis shown in this book is intact ie it has a foreskin. This book does not display circumcised penises.

Ideal Age

Ideal for children aged 5 to 10 years.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak from Sex Ed Rescue, and I just have to tell you about this amazing book I stumbled upon. I’m actually going to rush out and get my own copy because it’s that good. It’s called Let’s Talk About the Birds and the Bees by Molly Potter, a UK English sex educator. This book covers everything from how babies are made to puberty and healthy relationships. It’s a big book that came out in 2017.

I’m currently holding a library copy, and I can’t believe no one has borrowed it yet. That’s just terrible! Anyway, let me give you a rundown of what you’ll find inside. One thing I really appreciate about this book is that it has information for parents at the back. It’s so important to have guidance when talking to your kids about these topics. I love that Molly Potter addresses common anxieties parents may have and provides tips on how to approach these conversations.

The book covers a wide range of topics, like where babies come from, the changes our bodies go through as we grow up, and the importance of understanding that sex can be a private matter for some people. Molly Potter acknowledges that some adults may feel uncomfortable discussing these topics, which is why she uses the term Birds and Bees instead of just saying sex. By the way, please excuse any background noise, my dog is being a bit noisy.

The book starts off by explaining why boys and girls are different, and it includes illustrations to help kids understand. It also talks about which parts of our bodies are private and the importance of respecting boundaries. It even touches on the topic of keeping kids safe, which I think is fantastic. Molly Potter really covers all the bases when it comes to having these important conversations.

The book goes on to discuss puberty and how both girls and boys go through changes during this time. It explains things like periods and the need for certain products for boys. It also addresses the emotional aspects of puberty, because it’s not just about physical changes, but also about how we feel.

Now, let’s talk about the chapter on sex. Molly Potter explains how adults make babies in a simple and age-appropriate way. She uses illustrations to show how the two parts fit together and how sperm plays a role in fertilization. It’s important to note that the book also emphasizes that sex isn’t just about making babies, but it can also be about feeling close to each other and enjoying each other’s company.

The book covers other important topics like pregnancy, childbirth, and what it means to be a parent. It even touches on different types of families, like those with foster care, grandparents, same-sex parents, or step-parents. Molly Potter also addresses the fact that sometimes parents split up, providing a well-rounded view of family dynamics.

At the end of the book, there’s some great advice for parents on why it’s important to talk to your kids about these topics. Overall, this book is fantastic and covers everything you need to know about sex education. It’s the kind of book I would have loved to write myself, but why reinvent the wheel when there’s already something so good out there?

I highly recommend adding Let’s Talk About the Birds and the Bees to your reading list. I’m definitely adding it to mine! Well, I better go before my husband sees all these deliveries. Take care and have a great day!

Bye!
