Best media literacy picture books for kids

family reading media literacy picture books

There are some great media literacy picture books that will help you to talk to your child about the hidden messages we receive through the media.  Media literacy is the ability to identify different types of media and understand the messages they’re sending. And with kids constantly being exposed to a lot of these messages through tv, movies, music, books, magazines, radio, billboards, advertising, video games and more, it is a skill that they definitely need to develop.

One of the easiest ways to start talking about media literacy with your child is with some media literacy picture books.  You can either read them together with your child or let your child read the book by themself and talk about it together afterwards. They will provide plenty of opportunities to start conversations with your child.

You will only find books in this list that are readily available at bookshops today. There’s not a lot of books in this list, but I am slowly adding more to it.

You can find more books about different topics in the main list of Sex Education Books for Children.

And if you find this list a little overwhelming, you might want to look at the age-appropriate list of sex education books.

You’ll find more information about sex education in my Sex Education 101 page.

NOTE: Before passing any book to your child or reading the book with your child, you should read it yourself first. I might think it is a great book for a certain age child or that the information is valuable, but you may disagree. You need to choose books that reflect your values and the messages you want your child to receive.
