Hey there! I’m Cath Hak from Sex Ed Rescue, where we discuss all things related to puberty and sex education. Today, I want to talk about a fantastic book called Tom Needs To Go. This book is specifically designed for boys and young men with autism and related conditions, focusing on the important topic of using public toilets safely.

Let me tell you, I wish I had a book like this when I was younger. It’s the only one I know that addresses the specific challenges of using public toilets, whether it’s at shopping centers, schools, parks, or anywhere else.

So, let’s meet Tom. He’s out shopping with his mom and suddenly needs to use the toilet. The book explains the difference between urinals and cubicles, helping kids make the right choice. In Tom’s case, he needs to poop, so he opts for a cubicle. Now, as parents, we might prefer our children to always use cubicles, and that’s okay too. The book also covers urinal etiquette, reminding us not to stare or comment on what others are doing, as it can make them uncomfortable.

Tom locks the door, pulls down his pants, does his business, wipes himself, and flushes. Then, when he needs to pee later on, he confidently uses a urinal. The book emphasizes the importance of not dropping pants all the way to the ground and not touching the urinal with their penis. Tom shakes off any excess, puts everything back in place, zips up, washes his hands, and off he goes to continue his shopping adventure.

This book is a straightforward and direct guide to toilet safety. Of course, it’s not perfect, and you may want to add additional topics to the conversation. But it’s a great starting point for teaching your child the rules of using public toilets. As they grow older, it’s important to gradually let go and allow them to use the restroom independently.

So, if you’re looking for a resource that covers toilet safety and empowers boys and young men with autism and related conditions, Tom Needs To Go is definitely worth checking out. Happy reading!
