Book Review
A short overview of this book
William’s Doll by Charlotte Zolotow is a lovely story about gender stereotypes.
This book is an old one (but a good one) and tells the story of a little boy who wants a doll. The overall message is that there is nothing wrong with boys who play with dolls. A great book for talking about gender stereotypes.
Ideal Age
Ideal for children aged 5 to 8 years.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak from Sex Ed Rescue, and I’ve got something exciting to talk to you about today. It’s a book called Williams Doll that I’ve had for over 40 years. Yep, it’s an oldie but a goodie!
Now, let’s dive into why I love this book. You see, no matter how much we try to be gender-neutral, kids still pick up on those messages that boys should play with cars and girls should play with dolls. But Williams Doll challenges that idea in the most heartwarming way.
It’s a sweet little story about a little boy who really wants a doll. He wants to practice being a daddy, how cute is that? But, of course, everyone teases him and tries to talk him out of it. Luckily, his grandmother comes to the rescue and buys him a doll. And guess what? He’s happy!
At the end of the book, his grandmother explains to his father why having a doll is important. It’s so he can practice being a father when he grows up. Isn’t that a beautiful message?
This book is a gem because it helps kids grow up without rigid ideas of how they should fit into the world. It encourages them to be more accepting of themselves and others, embracing differences and breaking free from stereotypes and expectations.
So, why not grab a copy of Williams Doll and have it read in your household? It’s a fantastic way to start conversations about gender, roles, and expectations. Trust me, it’ll be a great addition to your bookshelf.
I hope this recommendation helps you out. It was a short video today, but an important one. Take care and bye for now!
