Book Review

A short overview of this book

From my Heads to my Toes, I say What Goes by Charlotte Barkla is a lovely book for young children for talking about consent and boundaries. This book is beautifully illustrated and the children are culturally diverse. The authors provide lots of examples of things you may want to say yes or no to, and the different ways you could do this.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. This is the place where I help parents find a better way to talk to their kids about sex. I also review a bunch of books because I believe that sex education should be easy and fit into your everyday life. Books are a powerful tool because they make it easier to have conversations and normalize the topic. So, let’s dive into this book I want to share with you!

The book I’m talking about today is called From My Head to My Toes: I Say What Goes by Charlotte Barkla and Jackie Lee. I’ve reviewed some of their books before, and I really like them. This one isn’t a board book, but it would make a great one! Sometimes they release books in both board and paperback formats, so keep an eye out for that.

The artwork in this book is fantastic, and it’s great to see diversity represented. The authors also have a knack for rhyming, which makes reading it aloud so much fun. When my kids were little, we used to read three to five books a night, and I always preferred the ones that flowed smoothly. This book definitely fits the bill!

It’s all about teaching kids different ways to say yes. For example, they can say yes to a hug from Mom, a kiss from Dad, or riding a crawling bug. And there are so many more examples throughout the book. But here’s the cool part: it also teaches kids about saying no. Sometimes we don’t want to hug a slobbery dog or play a tickling game, and that’s okay too. The book gives lots of examples of things they might want to say no to and different ways to say it.

The most important lesson in this book is about respecting other people’s choices. Yes and no are ours to use, and when someone says no to us, we need to say okay and let them be. It’s all about consent and understanding that everyone has the right to make their own choices.

So there you have it! Another fantastic book to help you have those important conversations with your child about consent. It’s all about getting them to practice and think about the things they can say yes and no to. I hope you found this review helpful. Cheers!
