Our New Baby Inside by Mick Manning

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Our New Baby Inside by Mick Manning is a lovely ‘lift the flap’ book for children that explains pregnancy.

This book does not talk about sexual intercourse (just the fact that it takes a sperm and egg from the mummy and daddy). The ‘lift the flap’ show what happens on the inside (the part that you can’t see) and talks about what happens to the mummy and the baby as it grows. The birthing part talks about both vaginal and caesarian births. It really is a lovely little book!

Ideal Age

Ideal for children aged 4 to 8 years.

Hey there, it’s Cath from Sex Ed Rescue! Sorry about the sun, but I just had to shoot this video before I forget. So, I want to talk about this awesome book on pregnancy called Our New Baby Inside by Mick Manning and Britta Grandstrom. Now, a lot of the pregnancy books out there for kids are pretty old, but this one is actually quite recent. It was updated in 2013, but it first came out in 2009, so it’s not ancient or anything.

You know, the thing about pregnancy books is that they don’t change much over time. The basics stay the same. But what has changed since we were kids is the different ways babies can be made. It’s not just about moms and dads anymore. We have surrogacy and same-sex couples having babies too. Unfortunately, many of these books still focus on the traditional mom and dad family.

Anyway, let’s dive into the book. It starts off with a cute introduction and little pictures of babies at different ages. I’ll try to keep it out of the sun, sorry about that. What I really like about this book is that it understands that when kids first become curious about where babies come from, they don’t necessarily want to know about sex. They just want to know about babies. So, it gently introduces the concept by saying that a baby begins when a sperm from dad meets an egg in the egg tube from inside mom. And hey, you can even skip over that part if you’re not ready to talk about it yet.

The book also talks about cell division, but it keeps it simple because not all kids want to know all the nitty-gritty details. It’s got these cool little flaps that show the different sizes of the baby, which is pretty neat. I wish I had this book when I was pregnant with my second child. It’s packed with lots of little bits of information, like the 12-week scan and how mom’s tummy gets bigger. It even touches on how mom gets hungrier because she’s feeding the baby.

One thing that kids find fascinating is that the baby can hear what’s going on inside mom’s belly. It’s like a big mystery to them, you know? They see the belly growing, but they don’t really know what’s happening inside. This book helps explain that. And it also mentions that sometimes babies can come early, just to keep things real.

Now, when it comes to the birthing part, the book doesn’t go into too much detail. It briefly mentions that sometimes big babies need a little help getting out, like through a C-section. But it doesn’t show any graphic pictures or anything like that. And finally, it ends with pictures of different babies doing different things, which is super cute.

Overall, it’s a lovely little book that you can pick and choose the information you want to share with your child. It’s a great way to start the conversation about pregnancy, and it doesn’t go too deep into the birthing process. I hope this review helps you out. Cheers!
