Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. On my website, I help parents find an easier way to talk to their kids about sex. Today, I want to talk about an important conversation: puberty. Specifically, I want to review a book called Girl Talk: The Ultimate Body Book for Girls.

Now, this book is published by Cider Mills Press, but it doesn’t mention the author’s name. Sometimes publishers hire someone to write a book without giving them credit. It’s a bit strange, but that’s how it goes sometimes.

Let’s dive into the book itself. I would say it’s similar to the American Girl books in terms of its conservative approach. It doesn’t discuss masturbation, sex, porn, or how babies are made. And when it touches on romantic feelings, it only talks about girls liking boys. So, it’s definitely on the vanilla side. However, it does have a great section on how friendships change during puberty.

The book has some pictures, but I don’t recall seeing a highly detailed image of the vulva. So, it’s not the most inclusive in that regard.

It covers a range of topics related to puberty, just like other books out there. The main difference is the presentation style. Some books have more pictures and fewer words, while others, like this one, have more detailed explanations. They all have their own unique approach, but at the end of the day, they cover similar ground. And let me tell you, they must be selling like hotcakes because they keep updating and publishing new editions!

The book starts by giving an overview of what puberty is and why it happens. Then it delves into how to take care of your changing body. I really appreciate that it dedicates a whole twelve pages to discussing feelings and friendships. That’s important stuff! It also talks about the expectations others may have of you, fitting in at school, staying safe, and dealing with stress.

Overall, it’s not a bad book if you’re looking for something a little different from the American Girl series. It’s more detailed and wordier than those books. Plus, it doesn’t mention sex, which can be helpful if you’re not ready to broach that topic with your child or if they’re feeling overwhelmed by early puberty. Sometimes it’s nice to keep things simple and PG before diving into the more complex aspects of becoming a teenager and an adult.

Oh, and by the way, there’s also a version of this book for boys. I think I’ve already reviewed it somewhere, so you might want to check that out too.

I hope you found this review helpful! Some of you might find this book really useful, especially if you want to start with something that’s a bit simpler and safer. Puberty can be a lot to handle, so starting off with a gentle approach can be a good idea. Cheers, and take care!
