In My Heart : A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek

Book Review

A short overview of this book

In My Heart: A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek is a book for younger children about the many different feelings we can feel. This book is based on how different emotions can make your heart feel different things. It is also interactive, with a cutout heart that is fun for young children to grab as they read.

Books like this are important as they help kids to recognise and identify their own emotions.

Hey there! Welcome to Sex Ed Rescue, my YouTube channel where I review awesome books that make sex education easier and better. You can also find lots of resources on my website, Sex Ed Rescue, if you want to learn more about talking to kids about sex. I’ve got age recommendations and other books on these topics too, so make sure to check it out.

Today, I want to talk about a book called In My Heart: A Book About Feelings by Jo Witek. It’s a big board book that’s super popular. I actually borrowed this copy from the library, and you can tell it’s been well-loved by how tactile it is. My kids used to have a blast flipping through these pages when they were younger.

What I really love about this book is that it’s full of rhymes. The words flow nicely, and it’s a joy to read aloud. It starts off by exploring how your heart feels when you’re sad, angry, or happy. It’s all about the different emotions we experience. Sometimes our hearts feel like big stars, and other times they feel like they’re going to explode. The book doesn’t just label the feelings, it also acknowledges that mean words can hurt our hearts and make us feel sad. But don’t worry, our hearts don’t stay sad forever. They can also feel hopeful and even afraid.

As we keep reading, we discover that our hearts can experience so many different feelings, from giggles to wiggles. It’s amazing how much our hearts can feel, and the same goes for your little one’s heart too. Today, my heart is proud. How does your heart feel?

Now, let’s talk about the book itself. It’s a board book, but not the super thick kind like moving house boxes. It’s more like a thicker carpet paper, so it’s sturdy but not too heavy. There might even be a smaller board book version available if you prefer that. I should mention that it’s a bit wordy, but that’s okay because books about feelings are incredibly important. They help kids develop emotional intelligence and understand what their bodies are telling them. When children can recognize and manage their feelings, they become happier and more content. And trust me, it’ll make your life as a parent a whole lot easier too.

I remember when my own kids would go through energetic or angry phases. That’s when I would grab books like this to help them understand and navigate their emotions. It’s all about giving them insight and letting them know that we all have feelings.

I hope you found this review helpful! In My Heart: A Book About Feelings is a lovely little book that I really enjoyed. Give it a read and see how it resonates with you and your child. Cheers!
