Proud of Me by Sarah Hagger-Holt

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Proud of Me by Sarah Hagger-Holt is an inclusive child-centred story about self-acceptance and the importance of opening up to those closest to you.

Here’s the storyline.

Becky and Josh are almost-twins, with two mums and the same anonymous donor dad.

Josh can’t wait until he’s eighteen, the legal age when he can finally contact his father, and he’ll do anything to find out more - even if it involves lying.

Becky can’t stop thinking about her new friend, Carli. Could her feelings for Carli be a sign of something more?

Becky and Josh both want their parents to be proud of them…but right now, they’re struggling to even accept themselves.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, your friendly Sex Ed Rescue guide. Today, I want to share a fantastic book recommendation with you. It’s called Proud of Me by Sarah Hager Holt. I stumbled upon it thanks to my awesome local librarian who knows my love for books on important topics.

So, Proud of Me is about two twins who were conceived through a sperm donor and have two moms. It’s their journey of self-discovery and acceptance. One of the kids starts wondering about their biological father and goes on a quest to find out more about their identity. Meanwhile, the other child explores their own sexual attraction and realizes they might be gay or bisexual. They even start a pride group at their school. The book also touches on the issue of homophobia, which adds depth to the story.

I have to say, this book is a gem! It beautifully explores diversity and tackles these important topics with care. I devoured it pretty quickly, and trust me, I’m a fast reader. What’s even better is that at the end, I discovered another book by the same author called Nothing Ever Happens Here. It’s about a family navigating their dad’s journey of coming out as transgender. I can’t wait to get my hands on it and share my thoughts with you.

Books like Proud of Me are crucial because they not only help children who may be in similar situations, but they also teach empathy and inclusivity. By reading about these experiences, kids become kinder, more understanding, and less discriminatory. It’s a win-win!

Oh, and let me just say, the author did an amazing job with this book. Sometimes, when authors tackle sensitive topics, the writing can fall short. But not in this case. I was thoroughly impressed with Sarah Hager Holt’s storytelling skills, and that’s why I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

So, grab a copy of Proud of Me and let your child dive into this heartwarming and enlightening story. It’s not only an enjoyable read, but it also opens up important conversations about identity and acceptance.

Cheers!
