Tell me: What children really want to know about bodies, sex and emotions by Katharina von der Gathen

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Tell me: What children really want to know about bodies, sex and emotions by Katharina von der Gathen is a fantastic book that answers questions commonly asked by kids going through puberty.

The book follows a ‘question and answer’ format, with a funny illustration to go with each question. The artwork is hilarious and the humour helps to take any awkwardness out of the topic.

What I like about this German book, is the straight-forward approach to providing kids with age-appropriate answers to their questions.  There are lots of questions about love, sex and relationships too. Something that is very much needed!

This book shows penises with a foreskin (intact) as well as penises with a foreskin (circumcised).

SEXUAL INTERCOURSE IS TALKED ABOUT IN THIS BOOK.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. I’m all about helping parents find a better way to talk to their kids about love, sex, relationships, puberty, and all that good stuff. On my website, you’ll find tons of helpful videos where I review books on sexuality and sex education.

One book that caught my attention is called Tell Me What Children Really Want To Know about Body, Sex and Emotions. It’s originally a German book that has been translated and published in English. You can easily find it on all the online booksellers. The media in New Zealand actually picked up on it, so it’s been getting some buzz.

What makes this book special is that it’s based on questions that nine to ten year olds have asked. The illustrations are fantastic and really bring the content to life. It covers not just physical stuff, but also relationships and those important questions kids have. It’s written by Katharina von der Gathen and illustrated by Anchor cool.

The book is designed in a unique way. You flip through the pages and each one has a question and a photo. Flip it up, and you’ll find the answer. It’s a fun and engaging way to present information. And let me tell you, the humor in this book is tastefully done. It’s not crude or inappropriate.

Now, you might be wondering if a nine or ten year old really needs to know all this information. Well, kids these days are exposed to so much about sex through media and the internet. It’s better for them to get accurate information from you in an age-appropriate way than for them to stumble upon explicit content online.

The book covers a wide range of topics, from different body parts to relationships and even questions about being gay. It’s educational and presented in a way that kids can understand. It’s not explicit or pornographic at all.

I personally love the European style of books like this. They have a laid-back and comfortable approach, which I think is great for kids. This book is definitely a gem and I highly recommend it.

Oh, and at the back of the book, there’s a huge list of resources for further reading. Unfortunately, my camera isn’t picking it up, but you can check it out on Amazon. They have a look inside feature where you can see the index and get a better idea of what’s covered.

Remember, when kids start thinking about sex, it’s usually because they’ve heard about it from others or are curious about how babies are made. They’re not necessarily interested in the act itself. But as they go through puberty, their bodies and minds are preparing for sexual experiences, and they’re trying to make sense of it all. That’s why books like this are so important. They provide factual information without any shame or embarrassment.

I’ve had this book for a couple of weeks now, and I can’t wait to share it with my ten-year-old son. I think he’ll find it really interesting. But it’s not just about giving him the book. We’ll have a conversation about it too.

So, if you’re looking for a great resource to help you talk to your kids about sex and relationships, I highly recommend Tell Me What Children Really Want To Know about Body, Sex and Emotions. It’s a high-quality book that’s worth every penny.

I hope this review helps! Cheers!
