That’s My Willy: A book about boy bodies for curious kids by Alex Waldron

Book Review

A short overview of this book

That’s My Willy: A book about boy bodies for curious kids by Alex Waldron is a book about penises and how to keep bodies safe. I’m not quite sure how to describe this book. It’s a little silly, but sometimes that’s an approach that works with kids. But I do like that this book has some illustrations that show the diversity in penises. Oh, and a lot of parents have told me that they love this book. Anyway, watch my video review and make your own opinion about it.

This is what the author has to say about this book:

One book in a series of innovative and groundbreaking picture books from exciting new writer and illustrator Alex Waldron. With funny, engaging text and cool, hand-drawn illustrations, these read together (or read alone) books are perfect for initiating honest and realistic conversations about our bodies, the issues of consent and staying safe, relationships and families and bereavement.

This book only shows intact penises ie penises that have a foreskin. Circumcised penises are not shown.

Hey there! Welcome to Sex Ed Rescue with Cath Hak. Today, I want to talk about a book called That’s My Willy: A Book About Boy Bodies for Curious Kids from the Fred and Woody’s Fantastic World series. Now, opinions on this book are pretty divided – some people love it, some people hate it. Me? Well, I’m sitting on the fence. But I’ll let you decide for yourself.

First off, let’s talk about the fun and playful tone of the book. It starts with a catchy rhyme about a boy and his willy, and how it helps him pee, fight pirates, and even go to space! Now, I know some of you might feel a bit uncomfortable with the idea of penises being portrayed as toys, but hey, sometimes it’s good to have a lighthearted approach to these things.

The book also emphasizes the importance of respecting boundaries. It reminds kids that while it’s okay to explore their own bodies, they should leave others alone. And if something feels uncomfortable or hurts, they can always reach out to their parents or trusted adults for help. It’s all about teaching them to take care of themselves and communicate their needs.

Now, I do have a small issue with the book using the word willy instead of penis. Personally, I think using the correct terminology is important. But don’t worry, you can easily swap out the word if it doesn’t sit right with you. Just cross it out and use penis instead. Problem solved!

The book also touches on topics like pubic hair, different shapes and sizes of penises, and even includes information on boundaries, privacy, consent, safeguarding, and gender dysphoria. It’s great to see these important subjects being addressed in a book for kids.

Now, I have to admit, there aren’t many books out there specifically about penises and how to take care of them. So, if you’re looking for a resource on this topic, That’s My Willy might be worth considering. But remember, it’s totally up to you to decide if it’s the right fit for your family.

So, there you have it! A quick overview of That’s My Willy: A Book About Boy Bodies for Curious Kids. I hope this helps you make an informed decision. Remember, every family is different, and what works for one may not work for another. Trust your instincts and choose what feels right for you and your child. Cheers!
