Your Body Rocks by Emily Lauren Dick

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Your Body Rocks by Emily Lauren Dick is a lovely little book for talking to young children about body parts, safe vs. unsafe touch, consent, anatomy, reproduction, and gender.

I really liked this book as it is very comprehensive and covers a lot of important messages for young children.

This is what the Publisher has to say…

Your Body Rocks! takes away the shame of kids being curious about bodies. Itโ€™s perfectly natural for children to want to ask questions about whatโ€™s underneath our clothes, so itโ€™s important they develop an honest foundation for understanding body parts, safe vs. unsafe touch, consent, anatomy, reproduction, and gender.

This book simplifies the tough stuff for kids (and parents, too) by providing the age-appropriate information that they need! A colorful, compassionate, and inclusive book created by Emily Lauren Dick and the Guiding Light Education Company.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hakanson, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. Today, I want to share with you a fantastic book that I recently came across called Your Body Rocks by Emily Lauren Dick. Trust me, it’s a gem!

This book is all about helping parents have those sometimes tricky conversations with their kids about love, sex, and relationships. And let me tell you, it’s a game-changer. So, let’s dive in and explore what makes this book so special.

First off, it acknowledges something really important – it’s totally okay to be curious about bodies! Curiosity is how we learn and grow. And this book emphasizes that right from the start. I love that!

It also reminds us not to judge people based solely on their appearance. There’s so much more to a person than what meets the eye. It’s great to encourage curiosity about bodies, but let’s remember that appearances don’t define who we are.

The book then goes on to talk about private parts – those parts of our bodies that we cover and protect. It’s a clear message: no one is allowed to touch your private parts except you. This book handles the topic of boundaries and consent in a direct and effective way. It’s definitely going on my list of recommended books for parents.

Our bodies are incredible, and it’s totally normal to be curious about our private parts. Sometimes, you might even feel like touching them because it feels good. But here’s the thing – that’s something you should do in private, by yourself. It’s important to have that personal space.

Now, the book also touches on the topic of adults helping you wash when you’re little, but as you grow older, you can take care of that yourself. It’s all about independence and growing up.

Sometimes, a doctor might need to check your private parts, but only when there’s an adult you trust with you. Safety is key, and this book does a great job of explaining that.

It also talks about safe touch in other situations, like when the dentist uses tools in your mouth. It might feel a bit uncomfortable, but it’s for your health. So, it’s important to understand that not all touch is bad, but we need to listen to our bodies and trust our instincts.

If someone ever touches your private parts or asks you to touch theirs and it feels unsafe or uncomfortable, you have the right to say no. Your body, your rules. And remember, if something feels wrong, tell an adult you trust right away.

Consent is a big topic, and this book covers it beautifully. It explains that anytime someone wants to touch you, you have to give your consent. It’s all about respecting each other’s boundaries.

Now, let’s talk about something that might make you giggle – the funny names people sometimes use for private parts. This book acknowledges that it’s okay to have funny names, as long as we also know the proper names and when to use them. It’s all about balance and understanding.

And speaking of proper names, the book goes on to label and explain the different parts of our bodies. It’s done in a unique and clear way, making it easy to understand. Kudos to the author for getting it right!

The book also touches on the topic of gender. It explains that sometimes, what we’re assigned at birth might not match how we feel inside. It’s okay to be different, and it’s important to respect and understand that. Gender is fluid, and this book does a great job of explaining that in a simple and relatable way.

It’s worth mentioning that our bodies change as we grow. From childhood to adulthood, our bodies go through amazing transformations. And guess what? There’s no one right way for a body to look. We’re all unique, and that’s what makes us special. So, let’s embrace and celebrate our individuality.

All in all, Your Body Rocks is a book that covers so many important topics that often get overlooked. It’s inclusive, informative, and handles sensitive subjects with care. I can’t recommend it enough!

So, if you’re a parent looking for a book to help you navigate these conversations with your kids, this is definitely one to add to your list. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Cheers!
