A Color Named Love by M. Ellery

Book Review

A short overview of this book

A Color Named Love by M. Ellery and Clara Reschke is a lovely book that helps kids to understand how a family works with polyamorous adults. Children with parents in non-monogamous relationships (where adults have more than one romantic relationship at a time) can not find books that represent the diversity in their family. Which is why books like this are so important as they include these children (instead of excluding them).

So this book helps to normalise all forms of loving families because it doesn’t matter where you come from or how your family is constituted, if there is love then you have everything!

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. This is my YouTube channel where I review books that can help parents have open and honest conversations with their kids about sex. Today, I want to talk about a book that a parent recommended to me. It’s all about polyamory, where a family might have more than just mom and dad – they might have a couple of other people too.

You see, kids are pretty observant. When they go to school, they notice that their family might be different from their friends’ families. Some kids have two moms, some live with their grandma, and some have two dads or even two dads and a mom. It’s important to talk to kids about diversity so they understand that everyone is different, including themselves. When kids learn to accept and understand diversity, they become more resilient and less judgmental. They’re more open to differences in others and in themselves.

Now, let’s dive into the book I want to share with you. It’s called A Colour Named Love Words by M. Ellery, with illustrations by Clara Reshki. This book is from the US and was actually funded through Kickstarter. One of the parents in my Facebook group told me about it, so I reached out to the author. They were really nice and sent me a copy to review.

The book is written in rhyme, which makes it fun to read. It’s all about celebrating diversity and love. It uses colors as a way to talk about different families. The story starts with a strong family made up of red, purple, and a child. Then, along comes blue, whose name is Eli. Eli becomes part of their family too. The book emphasizes that everyone is different and has unique strengths. It shows how love feels and how this family supports and cares for each other.

But the story doesn’t stop there! Another person joins the family – yellow, whose name is Betty. Now, it’s red, blue, purple, the child, and yellow. The book highlights the love and happiness in this family, with each person bringing something special to the table. Red likes to joke, Purple gives great advice, Betty is a fun playmate, and when the child is scared, Eli is there to comfort them. It’s all about love, trust, and enjoying each other’s company.

What I really love about this book is that it includes all kids, no matter what kind of family they have. If you’re in a polyamorous relationship with multiple adults in your family, it’s so important for your children to feel represented and accepted. This book does just that. It shows that all families are about love, trust, and being together.

I hope you found this review helpful. Cheers!
