A Nice Walk in the Jungle by Nan Bodsworth

Book Review

A short overview of this book

A Nice Walk in the Jungle by Nan Bodsworth is a book about persistence. Persistence or ‘not giving up’ is an important lesson for children to learn. It is also a vital part of protective behaviours.

As you undoubtedly know, sometimes parents get busy and don’t listen. And if your child has something important to tell you (like sexual abuse or inappropriate touch), we don’t want them to give up. We want them to persist until we listen.

So a book like this, can help you to start teaching your child about persistence.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue, my YouTube channel where I review tons of books on sex education and protective behavior. You can also find helpful resources on my website, where I make it easier for parents to talk to their kids about sex and other important topics.

Today, I want to talk about a classic book called A Walk In The Jungle by Nan Bodsworth. This book has been around for a long time, and my kids used to absolutely love it. I recently stumbled upon it while going through my bookshelves and decided to share it with you.

I’m in the process of giving away a lot of our old books since my kids are older now and we don’t need as many protective behavior books. But I realized I hadn’t included them in my book reviews, so I’m going through a bunch of them and passing them on to a friend who works in protective behaviors. She’ll distribute them to parents who need them.

This book is a fun one! It’s a bit older, from 1989 or maybe even the 70s. It’s all about persistence, which is such an important lesson for kids. Sometimes, our little ones try to tell us something important, but we’re busy cooking dinner or distracted by something else. I’ll admit, I’ve been guilty of not always listening attentively to my own children. But books like this remind us to be present and let our kids know they can always come back to us.

Speaking of persistence, there’s another book I need to get from the library. It’s also about persistence, and I’ll make sure to review it too. It’s great to have a variety of protective behavior books on hand. You can borrow them from the library, read them a couple of times a week, and then borrow a different one six months later. Let your kids pick one book and then you can choose the rest.

Now, let’s dive into the story of A Walk In The Jungle. It’s about a group of kids going on a walk, but there’s a big python following them. One of the kids, Tim, keeps trying to tell the teacher, but she doesn’t listen. The python keeps eating more children, and Tim persists in getting the teacher’s attention. Finally, she realizes what’s happening and saves the day! It’s a bit more on the violent side, but remember, it’s from the 80s. Nowadays, books like this would be a little less intense.

What I love about this book is that it’s not only fun, but it also teaches an important lesson. It shows kids that sometimes they have to keep trying and speaking up until someone listens. This is crucial when it comes to protective behavior. If a child is ever touched inappropriately, they need to know they can persist and tell someone who will listen and help them.

I hope this review helps you understand the value of A Walk In The Jungle. It’s a fantastic book that combines laughter with an important message. Remember, you’re doing an amazing job as a parent, and books like this can make a real difference in teaching our kids about persistence and protecting themselves. Cheers!
