Book Review

A short overview of this book

All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold is a lovely book for children about diversity in the school day.

Books like this are important as it encourages an acceptance and understanding that everyone is different, and that’s okay. Which means that kids are more accepting of differences in others, as well as within themselves.

This book is based around a day at school, finishing with what also happens when kids go home ie dinner, bath and bed.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and I run Sex Ed Rescue, my YouTube channel and website where I help parents find a better way to talk about sex. Today, I want to share a book review with you. It’s called All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Horseman. Sorry about the glare, it’s early in the morning and my kids are still asleep. So, let’s dive in!

This children’s book, published in 2018, is a real gem. It’s beautifully illustrated and has an important message about embracing diversity. The story takes place at school, on the first day, where everyone is welcome. The illustrations showcase a wonderfully diverse group of children from different backgrounds, with different skin colors, and unique styles. It’s a great way to teach kids that being different is totally okay.

The book goes on to highlight various aspects of the school day, emphasizing the differences among the children in a positive way. It talks about how no matter how you start your day, what you play, or where you come from, all are welcome. It even explores lunchtime, showing kids eating different foods and using different utensils. The message is clear: we’re all part of the same community, and our differences make us special.

Throughout the book, it emphasizes that we all have different skills and strengths, and that’s something to celebrate. It’s not just about school, though. The story also touches on the importance of spending time together and the routines of getting ready for school each day.

Books like All Are Welcome are so important because they teach children that diversity is a beautiful thing. When kids understand and accept that people come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities, they become more accepting of themselves and others. It’s a small step towards creating a better world.

Now, it’s worth noting that this book doesn’t delve into sexuality or body parts. It simply focuses on the idea that everyone is different, and that’s totally okay. It’s a lovely, sweet little book that opens up conversations about diversity and acceptance.

I hope this review helps you decide if All Are Welcome is the right book for you and your child. Remember, embracing diversity is a journey, and books like this can be a great starting point. Cheers!
