Being Born by Sheila Kitzinger and Lennart Nilsson

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Being Born by Sheila Kitzinger and Lennart Nilsson is the perfect book for kids who are really curious about what actually happens to a fetus as it develops.

It covers from conception (egg and sperm) to vaginal birth and breastfeeding. It is full of highly detailed photographs that have been taken inutero.

It’s an old book that you can’t buy new anymore but is available in most libraries. I have included it because it is such a beautiful book.

Ideal Age

Hey there! I wanted to chat with you about this awesome book I came across called Being Born by Sheila Kitzinger and Lennart Nilsson. It was published back in the late eighties, but let me tell you, it’s still a gem!

This book is filled with beautiful photos that kids find fascinating. Some little ones are really curious about pregnant bellies and how babies grow and develop, and this book covers it all. From the egg to the sperm, it takes you on a journey with different pictures and lovely descriptions.

The book starts off with the baby looking more like a sprouting bean than a fully formed little human. It explains how the different parts develop and how the baby gets its blood supply. And yes, it even talks about how the baby comes out. I’ll show you those pictures too, but don’t worry, they’re not too explicit. It really depends on your definition.

Now, I have to admit, it might be a bit tricky to find this book brand new. The copy I have is from the library, but I’m definitely going to order my own. By the way, the same authors have another great book that my kids absolutely love. It’s a big, thick one that covers everything from the liver to the kidneys, and it even has a section on how babies are made. My twelve-year-old and seven-year-old have been enjoying it for a couple of years now.

If you’re interested, you can order a copy from a library in Western Australia. I always try to recommend books that are easy to find and buy, so I hope this helps. It’s just another fantastic resource for talking about pregnancy. Cheers and have a great day!
