Pearl Fairweather Pirate Captain: Book Review

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Pearl Fairweather Pirate Captain, by Jayneen Sanders, allows parents to start having some important conversation with their kids.

As the mother of a daughter, I feel quite strongly about making sure that my daughter grows up feeling equal in the world. So in an attempt to give her a break from me ‘harping on’ about gender equality, I like to slip the odd book, like Pearl Fairweather Pirate Captain, into the pile of bedtime storybooks that we read.

My daughter is now 10 and a bit old for story books so what I do is ask her to read to her younger brother. And that way, I can still use a storybook to spark some conversation with her. Storybooks are great for instilling values and messages quickly, as they have to do it within 32 pages. Which fits in for the life of a busy parent!

There aren’t that many books out there that address gender equality, so I gladly said yes, when Jay asked if I would review this book for her. Jay has somehow managed to turn an educational book into a storybook that is easy for the parent to read! And she packs in a lot of issues into it, which means lots of opportunities for many conversations on a range of different topics!

This book  covers a whole lot of important issues in the one book:

  • gender equality
  • respect
  • respectful relationships
  • empowerment
  • diversity
  • leadership
  • recognising bullying behaviours
  • prevention of violence

Pearl Fairweather Pirate Captain, is a book that I think that all parents should have on their bookshelf. It has valuable lessons for both boys and girls to learn. This is a book that I think that all parents should have on their bookshelf. It has valuable lessons for both boys and girls to learn.

Hey there! So, I just finished reviewing this awesome book called Pearl Fairweather Pirate Captain by Jayneen Sanders and illustrated by Leslie Danson. Let me give you a quick summary of what it’s all about.

This book is a fantastic tool for teaching kids about some really important topics like gender equality, respect, empowerment, diversity, leadership, recognizing bullying behaviors, and preventing violence. I know, it sounds like a lot, but trust me, it’s all wrapped up in a beautiful little storybook.

First things first, I recommend reading the forward and the author’s tips and discussion at the back before diving into the book. I admit, I usually just jump right into reading a book, but this time I took the advice and it made a big difference. After reading the extra information, I read the book again with my kids and suddenly I had so many more questions to ask. So, don’t be like me, read the extra stuff first!

Now, let’s talk about the story itself. It’s all about Pearl Fairweather, the Pearl Pirate. The illustrations in this book are absolutely stunning. Jayneen’s writing style is so easy to read, unlike some books that try to rhyme and end up being a tongue twister. The words flow beautifully and have a great rhythm to them. And let me tell you, the pictures are just gorgeous. We had so much fun looking at the page where Pearl’s crew is from different countries and seeing the equality and harmony among them.

But of course, every good story needs a little conflict, right? Enter Captain Lacrosse and his scurvy crew. The book addresses his bullying activities and how Pearl stands up to him. There’s even a storm involved! I won’t spoil the whole story, but let’s just say that Pearl and her crew have some awesome rules that promote respect, equality, and harmony. It’s really important stuff, especially in today’s world.

The book covers a lot of ground, touching on gender equality, mutual respect, respectful relationships, empowerment, diversity, leadership, and more. I think Jayneen does a great job of addressing all these issues effectively. It’s a little book with a big impact.

So, my advice is to read the forward and the discussion at the back, then read the book with your kids. And when you read it again, you can throw in some extra tips and have some great conversations. If your kids are a bit hesitant about certain books, try making a deal with them. Let them pick one book, and you pick the other. It usually works for me!

All in all, Pearl Fairweather Pirate Captain is a fantastic book with beautiful illustrations, great values, and important messages. It covers so many issues in just one book, saving you from having to buy multiple books. I hope this review helps you out. Cheers!
