Counting Kisses by Karen Katz

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Counting Kisses by Karen Katz is a classic book that is great for starting very early conversations with babies and toddlers about consent and body autonomy ie being the boss of your own body. This isn’t a book about consent, but you can use it to chat about consent.

Watch the video to find out how you can use it to start laying down the foundations from a very young age.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. This is where I help parents find a better way to talk to their kids about sex. I also have a YouTube channel where I review tons of books. Today, I want to talk about a book that’s perfect for starting those very, very early conversations about body autonomy and consent with babies and toddlers.

The book I’m talking about is called Counting Kisses by Karen Katz. I absolutely loved these books when my kids were little. They’re so much fun! Counting Kisses is a great book to use as a tool for talking about consent. You can turn it into a game and ask your little one, Can I kiss you on your tummy? Let them respond with a yes or no. It’s all about planting those early seeds of understanding what consent means, even for your tiny baby.

The book takes you through different body parts, like toes, knees, and belly buttons, with cute little rhymes. Each time, you can ask your child if you can kiss that body part. If they say no, you respect their choice. If they say yes, go ahead and give them a sweet kiss! As your child grows older, they’ll learn to express themselves with words, and they might start saying no or yes more often.

Counting Kisses ends with a page about Baby’s bed, wrapping up the book on a cozy note. It’s a lovely little book that my kids adored, and I think yours will too. Reading it with excitement and enthusiasm really made it special for my little ones. It’s a fantastic way to introduce the concept of consent and teach kids that they have the power to say yes or no when it comes to their own bodies.

I hope this review helps you out. Cheers!
