Do Animals Fall in Love by Katharina von der Gathen

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Do Animals Fall in Love by Katharina von der Gathen is a beautifully illustrated and fascinating book about animal reproduction.

This is more of a nature book but I wanted to review it as I though it was an interesting book for starting conversations!

This is what the Publisher has to say…

The birds and the bees, literally. A fully illustrated compendium of fascinating and astonishing facts about animal reproduction for the whole family.

Bats give birth upside down. Swifts can mate while plummeting through the air. Scorpions attract their partners with a romantic dance. Male humpback whales sing together for days to bring females from many miles away. Dolphin babies come out tail first.

From sex education expert Katharina von der Gathen, Do Animals Fall in Love? is a compendium of all the weird and wonderful ways the animal kingdom reproduces – courting rituals both elaborate and devious, extraordinary physiology, cleverly planned pregnancies, the most devoted fathers and the sweetest animal babies on Earth.

With frank and honest illustrations – some full frontal – there’s something to amaze on every page, making this an excellent resource for parents and teachers to explain puberty and sex education through the more neutral animal kingdom, to children age 6 and up.

Comic illustrations bring humor and contrast to the factual and frank text, exploring all the most fascinating and astonishing facts about animal reproduction, from seduction methods and anatomy to family life and animal babies, in a compendium for the whole family.

Structured from seduction and mating through family life and ending with a page of delightful animal babies, this is a topic that will guarantee to interest children and reads like a David Attenborough documentary on the page. Designed to be read alone or together with the family, this striking hardback compendium holds all the answers to questions children ask.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue.

Sex Ed Rescue is all about helping parents find an easier way to talk to their kids about love, sex, relationships, and growing up. And today, I want to review a really cool book I came across.

So, this book is called Do Animals Fall in Love? by Katherina von der Garthen, a fantastic sex educator, and illustrated by Anger Kool. It’s been translated by GECCO Press in New Zealand.

Now, I know what you might be thinking – a book about reproduction in the animal world? Sounds a bit geeky, right? But trust me, it’s fascinating!

This book covers all sorts of animals and their unique ways of mating and reproducing. It starts off by talking about how they attract each other with mating dances, and then dives into the nitty-gritty of how they actually do the deed and make babies. And guess what? It even relates some of these animal behaviors to human relationships. Pretty cool, huh?

There are some really interesting facts in here. For example, did you know that penises can look totally different for different animals? It’s true! And there’s even a page about animal vulvas. Yep, they cover it all!

I have to admit, this book is a bit quirky and different, but that’s what makes it so great. It’s perfect for kids who are fascinated by animals. I actually have a friend whose kids love animals, and I can’t wait to see if they enjoy this book too.

What I really love about this book is that it normalizes the fact that everyone, animals included, makes babies. It’s not something to be hidden away or ashamed of. So, it’s definitely a book worth having on your shelf.

If you’re looking for something fun and educational, I highly recommend giving Do Animals Fall in Love? a go. It’s a great way to learn about the infinite ways animals love each other. And who knows what other awesome books this author will publish in the future?

Alright, that’s it from me. I hope I’ve convinced you to grab a copy of this book. Cheers!
