First Periods Don’t Send a Calendar Invite

First periods don’t usually give you much warning.
There’s no calendar invite. No countdown.

One day, it’s just… happening.

Maybe at school.
Maybe during sport.
Maybe in the middle of class.

Your child feels something unfamiliar.
They go to the bathroom.
They see blood.

For a split second, their stomach drops.

And in that moment, they either think:

“Oh. This is my period. I know what to do.”

Or:

“Why am I bleeding? What’s happening?”

You can’t choose the day it starts.
But you can choose what that moment feels like.

Is Period Ready For You?

Period Ready is for parents and carers of children aged 7 to 14 who are getting closer to their first period, or who have recently started.

It’s a good fit if your child has started showing signs of puberty, such as breast development, pubic or underarm hair, vaginal discharge, body odour, or a sudden growth spurt.

It’s especially helpful for kids who like structure, clear steps, and knowing what to expect, including both neurodivergent and neurotypical children.

Period Ready helps you prepare them before it becomes urgent, so they know what periods are, what to do, and who to ask for help..

This Matters

This matters to you.

That’s why it can feel harder to begin than it should.

You want to:
Keep it natural.
Answer their questions calmly.
Say enough – without overwhelming them.
Avoid turning it into a big, awkward “talk.”

You want them to have a better experience than you did.

That feeling alone tells you something important: you’re already showing up for them.

This isn’t about delivering a perfect puberty talk.
It’s about being prepared.

Prepared, not perfect.

Why I Created Period Ready

Why I Created Period Ready

photo of cath hakanson the creator of period ready

No child should feel frightened or alone when their first period starts.

And no parent should feel unsure about how to guide them through it.

I’m Cath Hakanson, a sexual health educator, registered nurse, and founder of Sex Ed Rescue.

For more than three decades, I’ve worked with families navigating conversations about bodies, development, and growing up.

Over the years, I’ve seen how much silence and stress can surround first periods – for children and parents alike.

And I’ve also seen the difference it makes when children feel prepared.

As a neurodivergent parent raising neurodivergent children, I also know that “just explain it once” doesn’t work for every child. Some kids need clear steps, repetition, sensory planning, rehearsal and time to feel ready.

Period Ready was created to make first period preparation more practical, more predictable, and less overwhelming – for families of all kinds.

To make preparation practical.
To make conversations easier.
And to help families approach this milestone with confidence.

Period Ready is a structured, guided, developmentally appropriate parent-child program designed to prepare your family calmly and practically for their first period.

Most resources explain what a period is.
Period Ready prepares your child for what to do when their period begins.

Inside Period Ready, you don’t just talk about periods.
You rehearse them.

That means:
✔ Practising how to put on and remove a pad.
✔ Making a simple emergency pad from toilet paper.
✔ Building a period kit for school.

Short videos. Simple activities. Real-life practice.

So when the moment comes, it feels familiar – not frightening.

Preparing Together

This isn’t just about understanding periods.

It’s about sitting side-by-side.
Watching together.
Practising together.
Maybe even having a bit of a giggle along the way.

You’re not delivering one big, high-pressure “talk.”

You’re having a series of small, manageable conversations.

You’re building confidence – for both of you.

And in that process, something bigger happens – quietly, without you even noticing.

Your child learns that when they have questions, they can come to you.

Not because you explained everything perfectly.
But because you showed up.

That’s what makes you askable – someone your child feels safe turning to when they need answers.

This Isn’t Just Information. It’s Rehearsal.

This Isn’t Just Information. It’s Rehearsal.

screenshot of modules inside period ready

Books explain what a period is.

Period Ready prepares your child for what to do when their first period starts.

You don’t just talk about pads.
You practise using them.

You don’t just mention school.
You rehearse what happens there.

Inside the program, you:
✔ Practise putting on and removing a pad – so it’s automatic, not panicked
✔ Practise rolling and disposing of it correctly – a small detail that makes school easier
✔ Build a period kit together – so they have what they need, wherever they are
✔ Rehearse what to do if it starts at school – including who to ask and what to say
✔ Learn to make a temporary toilet paper pad – a backup skill they’ll never regret having

This is hands-on preparation.

Not theory.

And it’s designed to feel manageable.

Short, predictable modules.
Clear structure.
No information overload.
Demonstrations that are calm and practical.

So children aren’t flooded with information.
They’re given simple steps they can return to.

When they’ve already practised what to do,
they don’t just understand periods.

They know they can handle it.

Support – Now and Later

The first period is just the beginning.

Preparation happens before it starts.
But questions continue after it does.

That’s why Period Ready isn’t something you complete once and move on from.

It’s a resource your family can return to – when it actually matters.

Inside your membership, you’ll have:
✔ A searchable period question library
✔ Age-appropriate written and video answers
✔ A separate Parent Hub with additional guidance
✔ Monthly opportunities to submit new questions
✔ Lifetime access

Imagine it’s 3 months after her first period. She asks you something you weren’t expecting. You don’t have to guess. You open Period Ready, search her question, and get a clear, age-appropriate answer. In under two minutes. That’s what lifetime access is for.

So when your child’s period starts – or when a new question comes up months later – you’re not scrambling for information.

You have a trusted, focused place to turn.

Period Ready stays centred on periods, so the guidance remains clear and contained.

It’s preparation now.
And support when you need it later.

What “Prepared” Actually Looks Like

Your child feels something unfamiliar at school.

They go to the bathroom.
They see blood.

For a split second, their stomach drops.

And then:

“Oh. This is my period. I know what to do.”

They reach into their school bag.

Their period kit is there.
They’ve practised.
They open the pad.
They place it correctly.

If they don’t have their kit?

They make a temporary pad with toilet paper.
Just like you rehearsed.

Later that day, they tell you.

Not in tears.
Not in fear.
Just matter-of-fact.

And you don’t scramble.

You don’t freeze.

You think:
“I’m so glad we did that.”

That’s prepared.

What Families Are Saying

I had been dreading this conversation because I didn’t know how to start it without making it awkward. Period Ready made it so much easier. We actually worked through it together over a weekend and it felt really guided and manageable. My daughter even enjoyed parts of it, which I never expected.

Mum of 9 yo, Australia

I thought my daughter might feel embarrassed or uncomfortable, but she was actually calm and really engaged. Practising things like using a pad and putting together a period kit made it feel normal instead of awkward. The rehearsal part made such a difference compared to just talking about it.

Parent of 11 yo, USA

A few weeks after we finished the program my daughter asked a question about periods that I wasn’t sure how to answer. We jumped back into Period Ready and used the question tool to look it up together. Having that there made me feel so much more confident. I’d absolutely recommend this to other parents.

Mum of 12 yo, Ireland

How It Works

When you join Period Ready:

1️⃣ Complete your purchase.
After checkout, you’ll be sent a short setup form.

2️⃣ Fill out the setup form.
You’ll tell me which email address to use for you, which email address to use for your child, and which child version you’d like them to access: 7-10 or 11-14.

There’s a short video in the form to help you choose the best version for your child.

3️⃣ I set up your family access.
Access is set up manually within 12-24 hours. It may take a little longer on weekends.
✔ Your child gets their own login for the version you choose
✔ Your child only sees their age pathway
✔ You retain access to the Parent Hub and both age pathways
✔ You can request a version change anytime
✔ No community or private messaging – just structured, period-focused lessons

Then you begin.

Watch a short video together (the longest is 7 minutes).
Complete the related activity.
Move through the 7 modules at your own pace.

You can complete it in a weekend – or spread it over a few weeks.

You don’t have to design the plan.

You just follow it.

Who It’s For

Period Ready is designed for families with a child who will experience periods and:
✔ Has yet to have their first period
✔ Or has recently had their first period

It’s for children who would benefit from practical preparation – not just information.

It’s especially supportive for children who prefer structure, predictability, clear steps, repetition, visual support, or time to practise before something new happens.

And it’s designed to work for both neurodivergent and neurotypical children.

While the question library and support tools remain helpful as periods continue, the core program focuses specifically on preparing for that first milestone.

It is not a full puberty program,
or a comprehensive sex education course.

It’s preparation for one important moment – done calmly and practically.

Period Ready is launching with a small first group of families.

That means you won’t be working through the program on your own.

During the first month, I’ll be running weekly live parent Q&A sessions where you can ask questions about your child, your situation, or anything that comes up as you work through the program.

You can attend live – or submit your question in advance if you can’t make the session.

These live Q&A sessions are only available to families who enrol before 6 July and won’t be included once the launch closes.

If you’ve been meaning to prepare for your child’s first period, this is the most supported way to begin.

Prepared, not perfect

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes.

Period Ready is designed to be clear, structured and predictable, which makes it especially helpful for many autistic, ADHD and other neurodivergent children.

The child lessons use short videos, simple steps, practical demonstrations and real-life rehearsal, rather than long explanations or one big overwhelming talk.

The program also includes parent training on how to adapt period preparation for neurodivergent kids, including support with:
– sensory worries around blood, pads, wetness, smell, stickiness or leaks
– anxiety around unpredictability and not knowing when a period will start
– literal thinking and the need for clear, concrete explanations
– executive functioning challenges, like remembering supplies or changing products
– interoception differences, such as noticing body signals or feeling unsure what is happening
– building routines for school, outings, sleepovers and everyday period care
– using repetition, visual supports, scripts and practice without pressure

While Period Ready is suitable for all learners, it has been intentionally designed so neurodivergent children are not treated as an afterthought.

The goal is simple: your child knows what to expect, has practised what to do, and feels supported in a way that works for their brain and body.

No.

You don’t need prior knowledge – and you don’t need personal experience.

Period Ready is designed for parents who feel unsure, rusty, or out of practice.

You simply follow the structure inside the program and learn alongside your child – calmly and practically.

You can absolutely still guide your child through this.

Period Ready walks you through the practical steps, language, and common questions so you’re not relying on personal experience.

You don’t need to have lived it to support your child confidently.

If your child hasn’t started their period yet, you’re not too early.

Preparation works best before it feels urgent.

If you’re noticing early signs of puberty (like breast budding and pubic hair), then this is usually the right window to begin.

Familiarity reduces fear.

It can still be helpful.

If the first experience felt rushed or confusing, you can use the program to:
– Build confidence
– Practise using products
– Create a period kit
– Answer lingering questions

It’s never too late to feel more prepared.

You don’t have to cover everything at once.

You can:
– Start small
– Pause if needed
– Spread it out
– Revisit later

Preparation doesn’t mean one big conversation.

It means building familiarity over time.

And because you have lifetime access, you can return whenever you need to.

Period Ready focuses specifically on preparing for periods.

For younger children (7-10), content stays centred on body changes and what to do when a period starts.

For older children (11-14), there is age-appropriate information about reproduction – including how eggs and sperm work, how babies are made, and how assisted reproduction (like IVF) can happen.

Detailed sexual intercourse education is not included in the child-facing lessons.

At the same time, I know that children sometimes hear words like “sex” elsewhere and come home with questions.

If that happens, you’re not left stuck.

Inside the Parent Hub, there is optional guidance and a printable explaining how sex relates to reproduction. That material is parent-controlled and only shared if you choose to use it.

You stay in control of what’s introduced and when.

No. Period Ready focuses specifically on preparing for a first period.

We briefly explain the body changes that lead to periods so children understand what’s happening, but the program does not cover the full range of puberty topics.

Instead, the focus is practical preparation — helping your child know what to do when their first period begins.

Inside the program, you practise things like:
– using a pad
– building a simple period kit
– handling a first period at school
– knowing how to ask for help if needed

If you’re looking for a full puberty education program that covers all body changes, relationships, and development, Period Ready is not designed to do that.

It’s focused on one specific milestone — helping your child feel prepared and confident when their first period starts.

No.

The tone throughout the program is calm, practical, and matter-of-fact.

We focus on what to do – not worst-case scenarios.

Children tend to feel less anxious when they know what to expect.

Preparation reduces fear. It doesn’t create it.

Children develop at different ages.

Some begin puberty earlier and may need simpler, more concrete explanations. Others are ready for more detailed biological information.

The 7-10 version uses simpler language and shorter explanations.

The 11-14 version includes more detailed information about body systems and reproduction.

Parents have access to both versions.

Your child only sees the version selected for them – and you can request a change at any time.

Your enrolment covers your family.

If you have more than one child who will use Period Ready, each child can receive their own login set up at the appropriate level.

There is no additional charge for siblings.

Parents retain access to both age pathways and the full Parent Hub.

No.

Parents or caregivers can share the Parent Hub login.

Each child will have their own separate login for their selected version.

During the founding launch period, you’ll have access to weekly live parent Q&A sessions for the first month.

You can attend live or submit your questions in advance.

These sessions are focused on helping you implement the program and navigate any questions that arise.

Very little.

For practice:
– A packet of pads
– A roll of toilet paper
– A clean spare pair of underwear

For a simple school period kit:
– A small zip pouch
– 2-3 spare pads
– A couple of small disposal bags
– Optional: hand wipes or sanitiser

Most families already have these items at home – or can pick them up easily.

The full program contains under 2 hours of total content.

Videos range from 2-7 minutes.

Activities take approximately 15-20 minutes each.

You can complete it in a weekend – or spread it over a few weeks.

You choose the pace.

You’ll have access for the lifetime of the course. That means you can use Period Ready for as long as the course is available.

You can come back to the videos, workbook and printables whenever you need them, without needing to finish everything at once.

If you’re noticing early signs of puberty and quietly wondering whether it’s time to start this conversation – that’s your cue.

Preparation is what helps children feel ready.

Not the other way around.

You can begin calmly.
You can begin with a plan.
You can begin together.

Start before the first period arrives – so when it does, it feels familiar, not frightening.
