Keeping Safe on the Web with Kyle the Kingfish by Safe Surfer NZ

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Keeping Safe on the Web with Kyle the Kingfish by Safe Surfer NZ is one of the few cybersafety books that also talks about pornography. Strangely enough, most cybersafety books tend to leave pornography out of the conversation. So I tend to get a little excited when I find a book that actually includes it in the conversation!

The book tackles screen time, bullying, being kind online, protecting their identity and pornography

It’s a good resource for starting a conversation about how to stay safe online. As well as start talking about pornography, so your child knows what to do when they stumble upon it.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. Here on my website and YouTube channel, I help parents find better ways to talk to their kids about sex. Today, I want to tell you about a fantastic book called Keeping Safe on the Web with Kyle the Kingfish by Safe Surfer, a New Zealand company that specializes in software blocking and parental controls.

Now, I have to admit, I wish this book was available on Amazon, but unfortunately, you can only buy it from the New Zealand website. But trust me, it’s worth it! I absolutely love this little gem.

What I really appreciate about this book is how it approaches sensitive topics like sexting and pornography. It doesn’t dive right in; instead, it takes a gradual approach. It starts off by telling the story of a little fish exploring the ocean. It’s all about how the world can be wonderful, but there are also some things out there that can be a little bit dangerous.

The book then moves on to talk about the internet and how there are good things and not-so-good things on it. It even explains how our brains can be influenced by what we do online and how important it is to find a balance between screen time and enjoying the real world.

Next, it tackles the issue of bullying and emphasizes the importance of being a good friend online, treating others with kindness and respect. Honestly, I think some adults could learn a thing or two from this lesson, especially when you see all the nasty stuff on Facebook and those YouTube comments!

The book also covers the topic of sharing photos online. It gives some basic cyber safety tips, like not taking pictures with identifiable information or sharing them without permission. It’s all about being responsible and careful.

And of course, it addresses the topic of pornography. It explains what it is and how it can make us feel different things. It acknowledges that sometimes kids stumble upon it accidentally, while others may actively search for it. But the important thing is to know what to do when you come across it: turn away, think of something positive, and tell a parent or trusted adult.

The book wraps up by reminding kids that being online can sometimes be tough, but they should always remember that they can talk to someone about it. It also highlights the importance of following the rules set by parents or families to stay safe online.

Overall, I think this book is a must-have for parents. It covers cyber safety, sexting, and pornography in a way that prepares kids for these realities without overwhelming them. It’s all about giving them the tools to navigate these situations confidently.

I hope you found this review helpful. Cheers!
