Book Review

A short overview of this book

Little Monkey’s One Safe Place by Richard Edwards is a lovely little book for starting conversations with kids about feeling safe and unsafe. It helps with understanding that our body tells us how we feel, and that if we listen to it, it will help us know when we feel unsafe.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue, my YouTube channel and website. At Sex Ed Rescue, I review a ton of books and help parents with sex education. I’m here to make talking to your kids about sex easier and empower them to make smart decisions as they grow older.

Today, I want to talk about a fantastic book called Little Monkey’s One Safe Place by Richard Edwards and Susan Winter. This book is all about preventing sexual abuse and keeping kids safe. It teaches children the importance of having safe people to turn to and safe places to go when they feel scared or worried.

So, let’s dive into the story! Little Monkey is having a blast playing up in a tree when suddenly, a big storm hits. He wakes up scared and rushes home to his mom. She gives him a comforting hug and reminds him that he always has one safe place. Little Monkey is curious and asks where that safe place is.

His mom challenges him to find it on his own. Little Monkey embarks on a little adventure, exploring different places. He checks out a hollow tree and encounters a snake (definitely not a safe place!). Then, he heads to the river, but a big crocodile shows up (not safe either, right? Crocodiles love to eat!). Little Monkey keeps searching and enters a dark cave, only to hear a growl from a massive lion. Yikes! He quickly runs back to his mom.

Little Monkey is disappointed that he couldn’t find his one safe place. But his mom lovingly tells him that his one safe place is in her arms. It’s a beautiful reminder that parents are always there to protect and comfort their children.

This book is a great conversation starter! You can ask your child where their safe place is in different scenarios. What if they’re walking on the street or playing in the park and something scares them or they get hurt? Who could they go to? What if it’s you at home, or they’re at school, Grandma’s, or a friend’s place?

By discussing these scenarios, you can help your child feel more prepared and confident about knowing who to turn to when they feel unsafe.

I hope you found this summary helpful! If you have any questions or need further guidance, feel free to reach out. Cheers!
