Look! Babies Head to Toe by Robie H. Harris

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Look! Babies Head to Toe by Robie H. Harris is a board book for babies about the different parts of the body and the senses. There is also another board book by this author, Who? A Celebration of Babies.

It is a book that could be used to teach your child the names of their body parts BUT the genitals are not included.

I must admit, that this surprised me, as the author writes sex education books that are used all over the world. And I thought that a book for babies would be inclusive of these parts. But it isn’t.

So what does it include?

It talks about the different parts of the body (head, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands, tummy, legs and toes) and their function.

So is this book helpful? Yes, it is as an important part of sex education in the early years, is teaching kids the names of the their different body parts and their function. And this book will help with starting those important conversations.

The Publishers, Abrams Books also have some notecards to help with reading this book to your child.

Hey there! Welcome to Sex Ed Rescue, where I’m here to help parents find a better way to talk to their kids about sex. One of the things I love doing on YouTube is reviewing books because they make sex education so much easier. They give you the words when you’re not sure what to say. So today, I want to talk about the new baby books by Robie Harris.

Now, Robie Harris is well-known for writing sex education books. She’s got these big Sex Ed Bibles that cover everything, and then she’s got some smaller books that focus on specific topics like pregnancy or where babies come from, for kids aged four to eight. But today, we’re looking at her baby books.

I have to admit, I was expecting these books to be all about the birds and the bees for babies. But actually, this one is all about bodies. It’s a book for babies about their bodies, but it doesn’t include any mention of genitals. I was a little disappointed because it’s quite conservative, but I think that might be because it’s published by a mainstream publisher.

You see, when it comes to sex education in the early years, the first discussions we have with kids are often about their bodies. And this book does a great job of introducing babies to their bodies. It talks about all the different parts and what they do. For example, it mentions the ears and what they’re for, just like when we talk to kids about their penis and how it’s used for going to the toilet, and later on, how it can have a sexual function.

But the main focus of this book is to show babies that we all have different body parts and they all have a role. It’s really inclusive and diverse, with different skin tones and ethnic backgrounds. It’s great to see that kind of representation in a baby book. Look, there are babies clapping and having fun!

Now, I have to clarify that this book doesn’t go into detail about naming specific body parts. It’s more about introducing the concept of having a body and what it means. It’s a great starting point for having those first conversations about bodies with your little ones. Of course, there are other books out there, and I’ll be adding more baby books to my recommendations soon. I even have plans to create my own, but that’s a project for another time.

So, that’s the scoop on this first book. It’s all about bodies and what they do. I hope this review was somewhat helpful for you. If you have any questions or need more recommendations, feel free to reach out. Cheers!
