Love Makes a Family by Sophie Beer

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Love Makes a Family by Sophie Beer is a lovely little book that is perfect for starting early conversations about families and love.

It’s a board book which means it will cope with little hands, plus it is a topic that kids love to read about. The illustrations are inclusive of different cultures, ethnicities and family types (eg single parent, 2 mums, 2 dads and a mum and dad).

It is a great little book for starting important conversations and will help your child to understand, that regardless of who makes up their family, that it is still a family and is built on love.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. On my YouTube channel, I review awesome books that help parents with sex education. And guess what? I also have a website where I help parents find better ways to talk to their kids about sex. Today, I want to tell you about a lovely book called Love Makes a Family by Sophie Beer. I was super excited when a parent recommended it to me, and luckily, my local library had a copy for me to check out.

Now, this book is a board book, which is great because it’s a bit sturdier than regular books. Kids can be a little rough with them, read them over and over again, and they’ll still hold up. Love Makes a Family is perfect for starting conversations about what love is. As kids grow older and enter puberty, they begin to explore and discover love for themselves. By talking about love when they’re younger, we can help them understand different types of relationships and all those confusing feelings.

The book beautifully illustrates that love isn’t just one thing, it’s many things. Love is baking a special cake, lending a helping hand, finding the biggest puddles, and so much more. What I really appreciate about this book is its diversity. It showcases different types of families, like a mom and a dad, a single parent, two dads, and two moms. It’s a great way to show kids that families come in all shapes and sizes, and that’s totally okay. What matters most is love.

Love Makes a Family is a simple book that sparks conversations about love and family. It’s a gentle reminder that every family is unique, and that’s what makes them special. So, whether you have one mom, one dad, two dads, or you live with your grandma, it doesn’t matter. Love is what brings a family together.
