Me and My Amazing Body by Joan Sweeney

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Me and My Amazing Body by Joan Sweeney is an older book about the human body that is still very popular. It talks about the different parts of the body and how it works. BUT it doesn’t include the reproductive system.

So why am I including this book? If it leaves out the genitals and reproductive organs?

I’m including it because of it’s approach to diversity. It talks about how our bodies are different and that’s okay. It also talks about that fact that bodies change, and that one day they’ll grow up into an adult (which gives you an opportunity to talk about puberty).

Hey there! Welcome to Sex Ed Rescue, I’m Cath Hak. On my YouTube channel and website, I review books and provide resources to help parents have better conversations with their kids about sex. Today, I want to talk about a fantastic book called Me and My Amazing Body by Joan Sweeney.

Now, usually I only recommend books that cover the reproductive system, but this one caught my attention. It’s been around for a while and has been updated over time. What I love about it is that it goes beyond just the basics of the human body. It dives into two important topics that many other books miss out on.

First, it celebrates diversity. It teaches kids that our bodies come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, and that’s totally okay. It’s so important for children to understand and appreciate the beauty of our differences. Second, it addresses the fact that our bodies change as we grow up. Yep, puberty is on the horizon! Surprisingly, not many body books cover this topic, so I’m thrilled that this one does.

In Me and My Amazing Body, you’ll find labels for various body parts, but it keeps things safe and doesn’t include any genital illustrations. It talks about the skin, the skeleton, muscles, the brain, blood circulation, the heart, lungs, and even the importance of eating well. It’s a comprehensive guide without crossing any uncomfortable boundaries.

The book wraps up with a powerful message: every person in the world has a body, and while they may be similar, they’re also unique. There’s no one else quite like you! And hey, it even throws in a few fun facts at the end.

All in all, I really like Me and My Amazing Body. Even though it doesn’t cover reproductive organs, it does a fantastic job of promoting diversity and preparing kids for the changes that come with growing up. So, if you’re looking for a book to help your kids understand their bodies and embrace their individuality, this is definitely worth checking out.

I hope this review helps you make an informed decision. Cheers!
