My Moms Having A Baby by Dori Hillestad Butler

Book Review

A short overview of this book

My Moms Having A Baby by Dori Hillestad Butler is a lovely book that explains pregnancy and birthing to kids, as well as how babies are made (AKA sexual intercourse).

There is a lovely month-by-month description of how the baby develops and what it can do, all described in a way that is very relatable to a young child.

Birthing is also discussed, but it only includes natural childbirth (vaginal delivery), and doesn’t talk caesarian births.

It also talks about how babies are made, but only includes a description of sexual intercourse. It doesn’t talk about the alternative ways babies are made.

This book DOES talk about sexual intercourse.

Hey there! Welcome to Sex Ed Rescue, I’m Cath Hak, your friendly sex educator. On my YouTube channel and website, I review books and chat about sex education, helping parents find better ways to talk to their kids about the birds and the bees. Today, I want to tell you about a lovely book called My Mum’s Having A Baby by Dori Hillestad Butler.

This book takes you on a month-by-month journey of pregnancy. It starts off by saying that mom’s going to have a baby, but don’t worry, it’s still a long way off and as tiny as your bottom front teeth. As the months go by, the book explains what’s happening inside mom’s body as the baby grows. It even mentions that mom has to go to the doctor for check-ups. Pretty cool, right?

Now, here’s the interesting part. The book addresses the question that’s probably on every kid’s mind: how are babies made? It explains that it takes a part from a man (sperm) and a part from a woman (egg) to make a baby. But how do they get together? Well, the book describes sexual intercourse in a straightforward way. It talks about a man and a woman who love each other and want to get closer. They get really close, and the man’s penis goes inside the woman’s vagina. After a while, liquid shoots out (that’s called ejaculation) and it’s full of millions of sperm. These little swimmers make their way up into the woman’s vagina, through the uterus, and into one of the fallopian tubes. That’s where the magic happens! The sperm and egg join together, and nine months later, a new baby is born. Of course, this is just the basics, and if kids have more questions, you can always give them more information.

As the months go by in the book, the baby keeps growing and growing. It talks about how the baby turns and even mentions that it’s as big as a stuffed rabbit at one point. This is helpful because sometimes it’s hard to see what’s happening inside mom’s tummy.

Finally, the big day arrives! Mom and dad rush off to the hospital because the baby is ready to come out. And guess what? It’s a baby brother! Now, keep in mind that this book is a bit older, so it assumes the baby is a boy. But nowadays, we know that gender is more complex, so feel free to talk about it however you like, using the language that feels comfortable for you.

And that’s the book! I think it’s a wonderful little resource. I love how it takes you through each month of pregnancy, explaining what’s happening and how the baby is made in a simple and age-appropriate way. It’s a great tool for starting conversations with your kids about this exciting topic.

I hope this review helps you out. Trust me, this book is a winner. Take care!
