Book Review:  A book for kids about gender equality.

Book Review

Pearl Fairweather Pirate Captain, by Jayneen Sanders, allows parents to start having some important conversation with their kids.

As the mother of a daughter, I feel quite strongly about making sure that my daughter grows up feeling equal in the world. So in an attempt to give her a break from me 'harping on' about gender equality, I like to slip the odd book, like Pearl Fairweather Pirate Captain, into the pile of bedtime storybooks that we read.

My daughter is now 10 and a bit old for story books so what I do is ask her to read to her younger brother. And that way, I can still use a storybook to spark some conversation with her. Storybooks are great for instilling values and messages quickly, as they have to do it within 32 pages. Which fits in for the life of a busy parent!

There aren't that many books out there that address gender equality, so I gladly said yes, when Jay asked if I would review this book for her. Jay has somehow managed to turn an educational book into a storybook that is easy for the parent to read! And she packs in a lot of issues into it, which means lots of opportunities for many conversations on a range of different topics!

This book  covers a whole lot of important issues in the one book:

  • gender equality
  • respect
  • respectful relationships
  • empowerment
  • diversity
  • leadership
  • recognising bullying behaviours
  • prevention of violence

Pearl Fairweather Pirate Captain, is a book that I think that all parents should have on their bookshelf. It has valuable lessons for both boys and girls to learn. This is a book that I think that all parents should have on their bookshelf. It has valuable lessons for both boys and girls to learn.
