Period. by Natalie Byrne

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Period. by Natalie Byrne is a comprehensive (yet simple) book that tells you everything you could ever want to know about periods.

It is filled with lots of good information as well as practical tips and advice. Things like a guide to your anatomy (inside and out), the menstrual cycle, the many different period products, vaginal health,  how to manage PMS and other things that can happen because of periods, and a brief history of attitudes towards periods over the centuries.

It is also a beautiful book to look at – filled with simple illustrations and the colour red!

This book is beautifully laid out, with lots of simple illustrations and the content nicely spaced out.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. So Sex Ed Rescue is all about helping parents find a better way to talk to their kids about sex. I have a YouTube channel where I review a ton of books and share lots of information, and I also have a website with resources and blog posts to help you have open and honest conversations with your kids about love, sex, relationships, puberty, growing up, and all that good stuff.

Today, I want to talk about a book called Period by Natalie Byrne. It’s an English book that came out in 2018, so it’s pretty recent. This book is about 200 pages long, and let me tell you, it’s absolutely beautiful. The layout, the size, everything about it is just gorgeous. It’s filled with lots of writing, pictures, and diagrams, making it a really engaging read.

What I love about this book is that it’s not just for girls. It’s inclusive and talks about it being for females or anyone who has a uterus and experiences bleeding. So if you have a trans child or a child who doesn’t identify with stereotypical gender roles, this book is perfect for them.

Now, let’s dive into the content. This book covers everything you need to know about periods. It breaks down what happens inside the body, explains the menstrual cycle in a way that kids can understand, and even teaches them about fertility. This knowledge is so important as they grow up and become adults.

The book also talks about different period products, but it goes beyond just a basic overview. It provides in-depth information on how to use tampons, how to know when to change them, and even covers vaginal health. It discusses the different colors of period blood and offers tips on how to take care of yourself during your period.

And guess what? It doesn’t stop there. The book also touches on PMS, cramping, pimples, and gives a little bit of history too. It’s truly comprehensive and covers all the bases.

I particularly love how the book starts with pads. It’s a great way to ease beginners into the world of periods. Sometimes all the options out there can be overwhelming, so starting with the basics is a smart move. The book provides descriptions of different pads, explains how to use them, and even discusses the pros and cons of different types. It’s really practical and common-sense advice.

Now, I should mention that the book does mention some specific products that the author likes. It’s possible they were sponsored by those products, but that doesn’t take away from the fantastic information in the book. In fact, this book is part of a movement in the UK to make period products accessible to those who can’t afford them. So there’s a bit of a political angle, but it doesn’t overshadow the valuable content.

In conclusion, Period is a fantastic book for kids who are starting to have their periods or want to learn more about them. If your child is experiencing periods, it wouldn’t hurt for them to take a look at it. They don’t need to know every single detail, just like we don’t need to know every tiny thing about wet dreams. But having a general understanding is important.

I highly recommend this book and it’s definitely one that I’ll be suggesting to parents. It’s informative, engaging, and covers all the important topics. So go ahead and check it out!

Cheers!
