Petals by Nick Karras

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Petals by Nick Karras is a fantastic book for normalising the diversity in vulvas i.e they are all unique and different. It is a book that is filled with lots of black and white photographs of vulvas.

This is an older book, but it is a favourite of mine. Mainly because I feel that the photographs are less confronting because they are in black and white. So it is a fabulous resource to show adults or older teens who are worried that their vulva is ugly.

Hey there, it’s Cath Hak from Sex Ed Rescue! Today, I want to talk about a fantastic book that celebrates the diversity of vulvas. You know, as kids grow up, they’re exposed to all sorts of images online, including ones of genitals. And sometimes, they start questioning their own bodies, thinking they don’t look like what they see online. But here’s the thing: a lot of those images are unrealistic. Most penises in porn are huge, and some vulvas have even undergone cosmetic surgery to fit a certain standard.

That’s why it’s so important to have resources we can share with children to help them understand and embrace their own bodies. And this book I’m about to tell you about is a gem. I used to have it when I was a sex therapist, and it was incredibly helpful for women who felt like their vulvas were abnormal.

What I love about this book is that it’s not intimidating. The photos are in black and white, which makes them less confronting than color photos. Let me give you a sneak peek inside. Just a heads up, there are lots of pictures of vulvas in here, but they’re all about celebrating diversity. Take a look at these examples, and you’ll see what I mean.

Now, I should mention that this book might be a bit harder to find, but it’s worth the effort. It’s an amazing resource for older teens, helping them to normalize and appreciate this part of their bodies. So, if you’re looking for something to support and educate your older teens about vulvas, this book is a great choice.

Remember, it’s all about embracing diversity and understanding that there’s no such thing as a normal vulva. Let’s empower our kids to love and accept themselves just as they are!
