Hey there! Welcome to Sex Ed Rescue with Cath Hak. On this YouTube channel, I review all sorts of books, and every now and then, I tackle topics related to sex education. I also have a website where I help parents find better ways to talk to their kids about sex. Today, I want to talk about a really popular book called Put A Lid On It: Exposing the Pornography Trap by Emily Olivia and illustrated by James Hart.

Now, this book is quite a hit, selling loads of copies. It’s actually an Australian book, which is pretty cool. One of the reasons it’s so popular is because it’s faith-based and appeals to Christian organizations. There aren’t many books out there that discuss these topics while incorporating parts of the Bible or referencing God. So, even though it’s not something I personally read with my kids, I understand that many families like to bring their faith and beliefs into their conversations about sex with their children. This book provides a resource that might be helpful to you as a parent.

Let me give you a quick rundown of the book. It’s quite big, with lots of pictures and plenty of words. It even has quotes from different Australian organizations in the front. The book starts off with a section for parents, addressing the concern of whether their child will see porn and what they can do about it. The author suggests that it’s good to start reading this book to your child before they turn eleven, but you can start as early as six. The chapters are designed to facilitate natural conversations, and there are facts at the end of each chapter to help you along.

The book covers various topics, starting with the importance of education and how our choices as children can impact our future. It also delves into the concept of nakedness, touches on sin and Satan (although not all Christian books do), and explores what the Bible says about nudity and bodies. It even gets into the science of how porn affects the brain and why it can be addictive. The book provides guidance on what to do if your child sees porn and emphasizes the importance of respect for others.

Now, I must admit, I’m not doing the best job describing it, but trust me, it covers all the important conversations you need to have. It even suggests Bible passages to read and offers analogies, like comparing the brain to a tree with roots and pathways. It also mentions other things people can get addicted to, providing a well-rounded perspective.

Overall, while this may not be the book I personally would use, there are plenty of other options out there. However, if a book that incorporates the Bible works for you and helps you start those important conversations about pornography with your kids, then this book could be a great resource for you.

I hope this review has been helpful, even though reviewing faith-based books isn’t my usual thing. But when it comes to discussing pornography with your children, I’m all about finding what works for you and your family. So, give it a shot if it aligns with your beliefs. Alright, take care, and remember, starting these conversations is key. Cheers!
