Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. On my YouTube channel and website, I review books and create videos to help parents talk to their kids about sex. Today, I want to talk about a book called Tadpole’s Promise by Jeanne Willis and illustrated by Tony Ross. These two have been around for a while, so you know it’s gonna be good!

Now, let me tell you, this book is a bit different. It’s a picture book that I borrowed from our local library. The story is lovely, but the layout can be a bit confusing, I have to admit. But don’t worry, I’ll guide you through it.

So, why am I talking about this book? Well, it’s a great tool to discuss healthy relationships with your kids. You see, one day, they’re gonna grow up and want to have relationships of their own. And it’s not just about romantic relationships, it’s about friendships too. This book helps us explore what makes a good friendship or relationship, whether it’s with a classmate, a sibling, or a best friend.

The story revolves around a caterpillar who falls in love with a tadpole. They make a promise to never change, but guess what? Tadpole starts changing anyway. And the caterpillar isn’t too happy about it. They keep giving tadpole chances, but tadpole keeps changing. It’s like an unhealthy relationship, where one person is controlling and not willing to meet halfway.

Eventually, the caterpillar says goodbye and goes to sleep, heartbroken. But tadpole transforms into a beautiful butterfly. Even though tadpole broke their promise, the caterpillar forgives them and goes looking for them. But here’s the twist: a frog mistakes the butterfly for a shiny rainbow and eats it. Sad, I know.

But here’s the thing, this book opens up conversations about trust, relationships, and friendships. It helps kids understand that change is a natural part of growing up and that they shouldn’t be controlled by others. It encourages them to think about their own friendships and the impact of their actions.

I hope this book review helps you have those important conversations with your kids. It’s all about raising awareness and empowering them to make good choices. And hey, I can hear a kid in the background, so I know you’re doing an awesome job as a parent!

Alright, that’s it for now. Cheers and happy reading!
