The Care and Keeping of Us is a mother/daughter set of books from American Girl that provide an opportunity for talking and learning about puberty together.
This is a set of 3 books that provide information but also questions. So it provides both you and daughter with information about growing up. As well as many questions that you can ask each other, to keep the conversation going. There is also a journal that provides some structured content that you can work through together, strengthening your connection with each other. A good alternative to the other American Girl books but it talks more about growing up than the changes associated with puberty.
Sexual intercourse is NOT talked about in this book.

Hey there! It’s Cath from Sex Ed Rescue, and I’ve got some exciting news to share with you. I recently stumbled upon a book that I wish I had discovered sooner. Now, I know it’s an American Girl book, and I’m all the way here in Australia, so it may not be my first choice. But hey, I’ve got quite a few American followers, so I decided to take a closer look.
The book is called The Care and Keeping Of Us, and it’s a collection designed for girls and their moms. Let me tell you, it’s pretty awesome. Inside, you’ll find three books: one for girls, one for boys, and one for moms. What sets this book apart is the way it combines questions, information, and ideas for both parents and kids. It’s all in one place, which is fantastic!
The book covers a range of topics like nutrition, hygiene, puberty, and even romance. It’s got these cute little bubbles with ideas on how to talk about these things with your child. I haven’t come across a book like this before, and I’ve just written a book on puberty myself. So, you can trust me when I say this book is a gem.
Now, it doesn’t go into explicit details about sex, but it does touch on liking people, social shifts, and family relationships. It’s a safe and age-appropriate resource. The book also provides a lot of information on hygiene, nutrition, exercise, sleep, and safety. It’s packed with useful tidbits!
Oh, and did I mention it comes with a lovely little diary? There are two different colors, one for the girl and one for the mom. The idea is that you and your daughter can use it to stay connected. You can write down questions, share stories, and express your feelings. It’s a great way to have those important conversations, even when you can’t talk face to face.
Now, I’ll be honest, this book isn’t cheap. I paid around $30 in Australia. But here’s the thing, you’re getting three books in one, so it’s definitely worth the investment. If your child is around 11 or 12 years old and enjoys writing and drawing, this book is perfect.
I wish I had found this book earlier, and I’m so glad I decided to buy it. I usually borrow books from the library, but this one was too good to pass up. Trust me, it’s worth every penny.
