The Care and Keeping of You 2 (American Girl) by Cara Natterson

Book Review

A short overview of this book

The Care and Keeping of You 2 American Girl by Cara Natterson is an American Girl book about puberty and growing up for slightly older tweens.

This is the next book from American Girl and is for girls who are starting to show some signs of puberty (the first book, The Care and Keeping of You 1,  is for girls who have yet to experience changes to their body). This book covers new questions that girls might have about periods, their growing body, peer pressure, personal care, and more!

Being an American Girl book, sex and sexual feelings are not talked about, so if you are looking for a puberty book that doesn’t talk about sex, then this is a book to consider.

Sexual intercourse is NOT talked about in this book.

Ideal Age

Ideal for children aged 10 to 12 years.

Hey there! So, let’s talk about The Care And Keeping Of You, the body book for older girls. This is actually the newer version, but there’s also a before book if you’re interested. It’s published by American Girl, and they have a website with lots of other cool books too.

This particular book came out in 2012, so it’s been around for about four years. It starts off with a lovely letter to you, dear reader, acknowledging that as you’re getting older, everything about you is changing. Pretty cool, right? Oh, and by the way, I think these guys also put out a magazine.

These books are super popular, and you’ll see them around quite a bit. Now, let’s dive into the content. It’s all about the basics of your body. You know, stuff like taking care of yourself, practicing good hygiene, using deodorant, and keeping those pesky pimples at bay.

Then it gets into the nitty-gritty of what’s happening down below, you know, the physical changes to your genitals, hormones, breast development, and even periods. Yeah, that time of the month. But it’s not just about the physical stuff. It also covers the changes happening in your brain, how you’re becoming more independent and maybe not wanting to hang out with family as much.

There’s also a section on body image, mood swings, and confidence. It’s important to know that you’re not alone in dealing with these things. The book also touches on family dynamics, how you might be seeking more freedom while your parents might not be ready for it. It emphasizes the importance of friends, dealing with peer pressure, and being responsible for your own body. Accepting yourself for who you are is a big part of it too.

Visually, this book is really pretty. I mean, it’s important to have something that catches your eye, right? The layout is beautiful, and it serves as a great introduction to puberty. It covers everything from pimples to answering common questions that real people like you have asked.

There’s even a section on the anatomy of your body, but don’t worry, it’s not scary. They’ve got a nice image of a vulva and other cool stuff on the other pages. The book is about 100 pages long, with lots of beautiful images like these. Oh, and at the back, there’s a glossary with the meanings of all the different words.

Now, here’s the best part. This book doesn’t dive into the topic of sex. It’s solely focused on puberty, which makes it a great choice if you’re not quite ready for that conversation yet. Plus, it’s one of the newer books out there and visually appealing too.

So, all in all, I think it’s a fantastic little book. I was pleasantly surprised by it, to be honest. There are so many puberty books out there, but this one stands out. It’s recent, visually appealing, and just a great resource. I hope this review helps you out. Cheers!
