The Penis Book by Aaron Spitz

Book Review

A short overview of this book

The Penis Book: A Doctor’s Complete Guide to the Penis–From Size to Function and Everything in Between by Aaron Spitz is basically a penis-owners’ manual.

I receive a lot of questions from teens about their penis, so I have been on the hunt for helpful resources to point them towards. This book is written for adults (not teens) and has a lot of information in it. I wish it had more detailed information on foreskins, in particular phimosis and retraction, as that is a common concern for many teens. Other than that, it is a helpful resource!

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak and I’m thrilled to have you on my YouTube channel, Sex Ed Rescue. This channel is all about book reviews, and it’s also the home of my website where I help parents find better ways to talk to their kids about love, sex, relationships, and growing up. Today, I want to review a book called The Penis Book because I’ve been getting a ton of questions from tweens and teens about penises on my other YouTube channel.

Now, I’ve been on the lookout for different resources because I really don’t want to write my own book on this topic. So, I stumbled upon this one called The Penis Book by Aaron Spitz. I’m not exactly sure when it was published, but I got my hands on a library copy from 2018. Surprisingly, it looks like it hasn’t been borrowed much at all! Anyway, this book is written for adults, so it can get a bit wordy. The author, Aaron Spitz, is a urologist in America who specializes in all things penis-related. So, you can expect a lot of medical jargon.

The book covers a wide range of topics like how erections happen, ejaculation and orgasm, semen, and even measuring up (which I think is about size). It also delves into penis enhancements because, let me tell you, I’ve been asked countless times about ways to make the penis bigger. There’s a section on the impact of porn on erections, discussing recent research that suggests watching too much porn can lead to difficulties in maintaining erections. The chapter on circumcision is quite small, but interestingly enough, I found some additional information taped inside from an anti-circumcision site. That was unexpected!

Moving on, the book explores the history of the penis, erectile dysfunction, pills like Viagra, and what to do when pills don’t work. It even covers surgical implants, low testosterone, the importance of diet, and overall penis health. Aaron Spitz also provides a five-step plan for maximum penis health, which is pretty cool. He also addresses problems that can occur with the penis, such as Peyronie’s disease (where the penis bends), emergencies involving the foreskin, infections, and sexual health. There’s even a section on genitals and gender identity.

Now, I was hoping to find more information about the foreskin, as I often hear from guys with specific concerns about it, but unfortunately, this book doesn’t touch on that topic. However, it does offer plenty of other valuable information, complete with helpful diagrams. Don’t worry, though, it doesn’t include any explicit images or anything like that. It does mention the concept of a hidden penis and potential issues with the scrotum, but nothing too graphic.

One interesting fact mentioned in the book is that most men think they’re smaller than average when, in reality, they’re not. According to the book, the average porn star measures close to eight inches when erect, but the average guy measures around 5.2 inches. In fact, 90% of men fall between four to six inches. So, it’s good to have some perspective on that.

All in all, I think this book can be helpful if your kid is curious about how their penis works and you want to provide them with accurate, medical-based information. It’s not a bad resource at all, considering it’s the only book I’ve come across that specifically focuses on penises. However, I do have plans to write my own book on the topic in the future. It’s on my list, but it’s about number 15, so it might take a little while.

I hope you found this review somewhat helpful. If you have any more questions or need further guidance, feel free to reach out. Cheers!
