Welcome to Consent by Yumi Stynes & Melissa Kang

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Welcome to Consent: How to say no, when to say yes, and everything in between by Yumi Stynes & Melissa Kang is an Australian book for tweens about consent.

The book is marketed as being suitable for tweens, but I would only recommend it for older and definitely more mature tweens. And I actually think it is better for younger tweens. A large chunk of this book is about sex, and it provides way more information than the average 11 or 12 year old would be curious about.

There’s a lot of information in this book and it does provide a deep dive into navigating consent.

Hey there, it’s Cath Hak from Sex Ed Rescue! I’m super excited to share my thoughts on this awesome book for tweens and teens about consent and sex. Yumi Stynes and Dr. Melissa Kang did an amazing job with this one, and it’s an Australian gem!

So, let me tell you a bit about it. Welcome to Consent is not your typical heavy, intense book about sex. It’s more like a vanilla PG conversation, which makes it approachable and easy to understand. The authors cover a wide range of topics related to consent, not just sexual consent. They really emphasize that consent applies to everything in life.

The book covers what yes looks like, what no doesn’t look like, and things you should consider when it comes to consent. It also empowers you to be the boss of your own body, which is super important. And hey, there’s even a cool section at the back for when you’re ready to explore crushes, kisses, and all those feelings that come with growing up.

From relationships to hookups, the book tackles consent in different contexts. It even addresses challenges that may arise in casual sexual encounters and how to handle them. They talk about the importance of speaking up when something doesn’t feel right and provide guidance on seeking help if needed.

Visually, the book is fantastic! It’s beautifully laid out with lots of pictures and packed with valuable information. Trust me, you’ll love it.

By the way, if you want to explore more consent books, I’ve got a list on my website. You can also check out my book review page for age-appropriate recommendations. I cover a wide range of topics related to sex education, so you’ll find something for everyone.

I hope you’re as excited about this book as I am. Cheers!
