Welcome to Your Boobs by Yumi Stynes & Dr Melissa Kang

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Welcome to Your Boobs: Your easy, no-silly-questions guide to your breast friends by Yumi Stynes & Dr Melissa Kang is is an inclusive book that tells tweens everything they need to know about breasts.

There aren’t many books for tweens that focus on the breasts alone. But because tweens (and even teens) have lots of questions about them, it is fantastic to finally see a book that will help to answer their questions. I love the diversity in this book, as it emphasises the wide range of differences you will find in a body. Plus the authors normalise the differences, which will reassure tweens that there isn’t anything wrong with their own development (and breasts) as they go through puberty.

This book is also inclusive, and it talks about how to manage boobs if you are gender diverse. Gender and gender identity are also explained.

Overall, this is a fantastic resource that will support tweens as they go through puberty.

A transcription of the book review

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, your friendly Sex Ed Rescue guide. Today, I want to share an awesome book with you that I recently discovered. It’s all about boobs or breasts, specifically designed for tweens. Now, there are plenty of books out there about puberty and changing bodies, but not many that focus solely on this topic.

I’ve actually reviewed another book on my list that covers the same subject, but this one is brand new. I’m really curious to see if the authors will also release a book about penises or vulvas in the future. However, since it’s published by a mainstream publisher, they might find that a bit controversial. We’ll just have to wait and see!

The book is called Welcome To Your Boobs: Your Easy, No Dumb Questions Guide to Your Breast Friends. It’s written by Yumi Stynes and Dr. Melissa Kang. You might recognize Melissa Kang from her days as the Dolly doctor in Australia. Remember Dolly magazine? It was quite popular when I was growing up, although it did reinforce some body stereotypes. Nowadays, magazines are a bit more politically correct, but Melissa Kang has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to bodies.

Yumi Stynes, on the other hand, has a podcast and has also written other books on topics like periods and consent. I’m really excited to see what else they have in store for us. I couldn’t find any sneak peeks, but I’ll keep you posted!

One thing I love about this book is its inclusivity. Many publishers don’t make books that are inclusive when it comes to gender diversity, but this one does. It talks about managing breasts for transgender and non-binary individuals too. It’s great to see that the publishers embraced inclusivity. Sometimes, I receive messages from parents who are against inclusive books, but this one is subtly inclusive from the start.

Let’s dive into what’s inside the book. It’s quite thick and covers a wide range of topics. I appreciate that it normalizes the differences in breasts and celebrates the diversity of bodies and skin colors. During puberty, many kids worry that their bodies are not normal, and this book helps to alleviate those concerns. It lets them know they’re not alone. For example, if they have hair growing around their nipple, the book talks about it and reassures them that others experience the same thing.

I also love that the book discusses different breast sizes, unevenness, and even the possibility of a third nipple. It embraces the whole range of diversity. This fantastic Australian book is available in many libraries, and I hope it can be helpful to you and your child, no matter where you live.

So, if you’re looking for a book to have open and honest conversations with your kids about their bodies, this is a great choice. It satisfies their curiosity, empowers them, and helps them feel more positive about their changing bodies during puberty.

I hope you find this review helpful. Cheers!
