Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue, my website where I help parents like you find a better way to talk to your teens about love, sex, relationships, and growing up. Sorry about the glare, I’m filming this on a Saturday morning and I need to return these books to the library. Let me try to keep the sun out of the frame.

Alright, let’s talk about Girls and Sex by Peggy Orenstein. This book is a must-have for all parents of teenagers. Now, I don’t know about you, but as I’ve gotten older, I find it harder to read those academic books. That’s why I love this one. It’s filled with stories that make it fascinating and easy to read.

Peggy Orenstein went out and interviewed teenagers, mostly in the US, about love, sex, relationships, and all the stuff that comes with it. She dives into topics like pornography and sexualization, and really unpacks what’s happening in the lives of these teens. And that’s why this book is so helpful.

As a parent of both a boy and a girl, I want to be prepared for when my kids enter the world of relationships and sexuality. Having a better understanding of what they might face out there means I can have more meaningful conversations with them. This book gives you insights into the landscape your kids might be growing up in. Even if they’re not directly experiencing it, their friends might be, and that can still have an impact on your child.

So, keep an eye out for this book at your local library. It’s incredibly popular worldwide. If you have the means, you can even try finding a second-hand copy. I’ve been doing that myself whenever I visit a used bookstore. It’s definitely a book that every parent should read, but I’d suggest waiting until your kids are in their early to mid-teens before diving in. It’s not quite relevant for younger children just yet.

I hope this information is helpful to you. Cheers!
