Book Review

A short overview of this book

Welcome to Your Period! by Yumi Stynes is one of the many books that have been written for teens about periods. This book is straightforward and provides teens with age-appropriate information, with some great illustrations that will help to entertain as well as educate!

Sex is mentioned in the book but the assumption has been made that the reader already knows what sexual intercourse is.

Hey there! Welcome to Sex Ed Rescue, where I share my thoughts on all kinds of books, including this one. I’m Cath Hak, and I’m here to help parents find an easier way to talk to their kids about love, sex, relationships, puberty, and yes, periods too! Today, I want to talk about a book called Welcome to Your Period by Yumi Stynes and Dr. Melissa Kang.

Now, this book is specifically for Australian teens, and it’s all about handling periods like a boss. It came out in 2020, and these authors have also written a book on consent, which is a hot topic right now. There are so many period books out there, but this one stands out because it assumes you already know what sex is. So if you’re a younger teen, like around 11 or 12, this book might be just right for you. But if you’re 16, you might find it a bit too basic.

Inside, you’ll find all the usual stuff about periods, like common questions and how to talk to your parents about it. They’ve tried to be inclusive by mentioning that anyone with a uterus can have a period, but they could have done a better job following through on that inclusivity. However, they do show different skin tones and even include pictures of people with disabilities, which is great to see.

This book isn’t like a novel with tons of text. It’s got pictures and a bit of humor sprinkled in, which makes it more engaging. In fact, it’s one of the few period books I know that uses humor. There are others that take a more New Age Earth mother approach or a more formal mom talking to child style, but this one is a bit trendier and easier on the eyes.

So, if you’re on the lookout for a book that tackles periods with a bit of fun and interactive elements, this could be a great choice for your child. I’ve got quite a collection of period books myself, and this one definitely stands out. Just remember, every person’s experience with periods is unique, and it’s important to find a book that resonates with your child.

Hope this review helps! Cheers!
