We’re Having a Baby by Marion Cocklico

Book Review

A short overview of this book

We’re Having a Baby by Marion Cocklico is a great book for explaining a new baby to a toddler. And what makes it even better, is that it is a board book! Which means it will cope with rough handling!

As expected for this age group, the book is very simple and doesn’t talk about how babies are made. It talks about how the baby grows and that the tummy will get bigger. In regards to the birth, it doesn’t explain how the baby comes out, just that it arrives when mummy and daddy go to hospital. As I have already said, it is very simple BUT it is a book that was written for toddlers. You’ll also find helpful reader notes at the bottom of each page.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and I’m here to talk about a super cute board book for little kids all about having a baby or pregnancy. How cool is that? I review books like this on my YouTube channel, Sex Ed Rescue, and I’m really excited to start exploring board books for younger kids too. By the way, if you need more help with talking to your kids about love, sex, relationships, and growing up, you can also check out my website.

Now, let’s dive into this book called We’re Having a Baby. I couldn’t find the exact author, but it’s illustrated by Marian Cocklico. Sometimes these books are written by employees of big companies, so it’s not always easy to track down the author. But hey, let’s focus on the book itself!

First off, I love that this book has thicker pages, kind of like a board book. It’s not as flimsy as those super thin ones, but not as thick as the really sturdy ones either. It’s just right! Plus, there are these little tips and notes at the bottom of the pages. They’re a great idea, even though they’re written in small print that most kids won’t notice. It’s like a hidden bonus for parents!

Now, here’s the thing: this book doesn’t go into detail about how babies are made or talk about things like IVF. It simply explains that there’s a baby growing in the tummy. It keeps it simple and interactive, with little flaps and movable parts. It’s a great way to introduce the concept of pregnancy to little ones.

One thing to note is that the book only talks about women being pregnant. It doesn’t cover other possibilities. But hey, it’s still a step in the right direction! And I’m happy to see some cultural diversity in the illustrations. It’s important for kids to see themselves represented in the books they read.

The book also touches on the fact that the child will become a big sister. It’s a sweet way to prepare them for the new addition to the family. And there are even tips in the book, like telling children who will take care of them while the baby is being born. It’s all about making it a special occasion and reducing any anxiety they might have.

Now, I should mention that this book refers to the baby as a boy. But you know what? There’s a new wave of books coming out that are more inclusive and open-minded. No book is ever perfect, but you can always adapt it to fit your own language and preferences. If it’s your own book, you can even scratch out words and write in new ones!

The book goes on to talk about the baby’s arrival, visitors, and how the baby will eventually grow bigger and less loud. It’s a lovely little journey for kids to follow along with.

I have to say, there aren’t many board books out there about pregnancy and babies, which is why I’m on the lookout for more. Board books are great because they’re sturdy and can withstand a bit of chewing, sucking, and rough play. It’s a fantastic way to encourage a love of books in your little ones.

I hope this review was helpful and gave you a good sense of what to expect from We’re Having a Baby. It’s just one of the few books out there on this topic for young children. Remember, no book is perfect, but you can always make it work for you and your family. Happy reading!
