What is Consent? Why is it Important? And Other Big Questions by Louise Spilbury & Yas Necati

Book Review

A short overview of this book

What is Consent? Why is it Important? And Other Big Questions by Louise Spilbury & Yas Necati is a book for children that talks about consent and how it applies in everyday life.

A fantastic little book that talks about consent in general. Sexual consent is included but the focus is on consent as a wider (not specific) topic. Consent sounds simple but it is actually quite complicated when applied to everyday life.

An essential book for all bookshelves as it will help parents to start talking about consent so that their child has a clear understanding by the time they are sexually active.

Ideal Age

Ideal for children aged 8 to 14 years.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak from Sex Ed Rescue, and I just have to tell you about this amazing book that I’m absolutely in love with. It’s called What Is Consent? Why Is It Important and Other Big Questions by Louise Spillsbury and Yas Necati. Now, forgive me if I mispronounced their names, but this book is seriously relevant, even though it came out in 2017.

Consent is such a hot topic right now, and it’s no wonder people are writing books about it. Parents everywhere want to know how to talk to their kids about consent. We’re hearing so many stories of people having things done to them without their consent, and it’s time for us to stand up and address this issue. It’s scary to think that it could happen to our own children, or that our children could be bystanders in such situations.

But here’s the good news: this book is here to help. It’s perfect for kids around the ages of 10 to 14. Now, don’t worry, it’s not all about sex. In fact, the sex part is just a small section at the back. The book covers different types of consent, like online consent and medical consent, too.

What I really love about this book is that it takes the focus away from sex. It’s beautifully laid out, not too big, and has about 46 pages. The content is fantastic, and it explains everything in a way that kids can easily understand. It covers topics like what consent is, how to recognize it, how to give consent when it comes to your own body, and what to do when you feel pressured by your peers or even by yourself.

There’s also a section on the law and what to do if you didn’t give consent. Plus, they provide some great information and websites at the back for further resources. The book emphasizes that consent isn’t just the absence of a no, but the presence of a yes. It’s all about understanding boundaries, owning your own body, and why consent is so important.

Oh, and they didn’t forget about boys either! There’s some really important stuff in there for them too, like breaking stereotypes and understanding that everyone’s boundaries can be different. They even touch on consent and disability, because boundaries can vary in those situations.

The book also addresses the pressure kids may feel to fit in and how to handle it. It’s truly a fantastic resource that every kid should read as they grow up. We need to make sure our kids are crystal clear about consent, so they don’t become victims of having their consent disrespected. And let’s not forget, we also want to ensure that our children never end up being accused of doing something without someone’s consent. It’s a serious issue that can have lifelong consequences.

So, I’m beyond excited to have found this book. It’s an absolute must-have in any collection of books for kids. I hope this review helps you see just how important and valuable this book is. Cheers!
