What is Pregnancy by Kate E. Reynolds

Book Review

A short overview of this book

What is Pregnancy by Kate E. Reynolds provides an explanation of pregnancy for people with autism and special education needs and disabilities (SEND). It helps readers to understand the physical processes of pregnancy, as well as important practical information, such as how to stay healthy in pregnancy, antenatal care, the role of the midwife and the involvement of partners.

Many people with autism and SEND may want or plan to have children. Many women who have autism, special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have poor experiences of prenatal and postnatal care and high levels of stress, anxiety and depression or do not disclose their pregnancy until far into their terms due to fears of forced termination. This book frankly explains pregnancy so that the reader has a clear understanding of what constitutes pregnancy, what happens during labour and is aware of their legal right to create a family.

Kate E. Reynolds also has other books that you may find helpful.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hakanson, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. This is where I help parents find an easier way to talk to their kids about love, sex, relationships, and growing up. I also love reviewing books because I believe that sex education doesn’t have to be complicated, and books are a fantastic resource to help you have these important conversations.

Today, I want to talk about a book called What is Pregnancy? by Kate E Reynolds. Now, Kate has written some other great books on topics like masturbation, appropriate behavior, and going to public toilets. Her books are specifically designed for people with autism, special education needs, and disabilities. She really knows her stuff because she has children on the spectrum and has done a lot of work in the field of disability and sex education.

What is Pregnancy? is part of a series of books that Kate has written. There’s also one on What is Sex? and another on What is Menopause? These books are great because they explain things in a factual way without assuming that you already know everything. Kate uses straightforward language, which I really appreciate. In Australia, we like to call a spade a spade, so it’s refreshing to see a book that doesn’t beat around the bush.

Now, I should mention that these books are a bit more advanced than the simpler ones for younger children. They dive into topics like conception, the stages of pregnancy, and what to expect when you’re expecting. Kate also covers important things like taking care of yourself during pregnancy, going to the doctor, and even what happens during labor. She even includes a section on vaginal delivery and the delivery of the placenta. Oh, and don’t worry, she also talks about when the baby comes out face up, so you’ll know what to expect.

I must apologize, though. I got a bit confused with the pictures because I’m wearing glasses and the light is reflecting on them. But hey, we all make mistakes, right? Anyway, there’s a picture of a Caesarean section in there, and it’s important to note that Kate doesn’t specifically talk about Caesareans in this book.

At the end of the book, there’s a handy section where you can jot down information about your doctor and other important details. It’s a simple book that outlines what pregnancy is, what happens during pregnancy and labor, and what to expect during childbirth. It strikes a great balance between being straightforward and informative without being too simplistic.

I hope you find this review helpful! Cheers!
