Hey there, I’m Cath Hak from Sex Ed Rescue and today I want to chat with you about a book called Good Pictures, Bad Pictures: Junior Edition by Kristen Jenson. Now, I don’t have the book with me right now, it’s hidden somewhere, but let me tell you why it’s worth checking out.

You see, there’s another book by the same author that came out earlier, but it’s more suitable for older children. This junior edition is specifically designed to help younger kids understand and protect their minds in this digital age. Let’s face it, once your kids have access to devices, they’re bound to stumble upon things like videos on YouTube or search for stuff on Google.

The reality is, they might come across pictures or videos of people having sex, also known as pornography. That’s why it’s crucial to start talking to kids about this topic from a young age. Unfortunately, getting hold of this book in Australia is a bit tricky at the moment, so I had to order mine from an American website with reasonable shipping to Australia.

Now, let’s get into the book itself. It’s not a bad little book, especially considering there aren’t many resources on this topic. It’s simple and easy to understand, with around 20 to 30 pages. The pages are filled with lovely drawings that your kids will enjoy. I don’t know about your kids, but mine love it when there’s something hidden on every page of a book. It makes it more interactive and fun.

The book is approachable and kid-friendly, despite the scary nature of the topic. When it arrived a couple of days ago, I immediately handed it to my husband to read to our seven-year-old son during storytime. He didn’t even realize what it was about, but that’s beside the point. The pictures and content are very relatable and engaging.

The book starts off with a simple discussion about good and bad pictures. It briefly touches on videos too, but keep in mind that kids are more likely to stumble upon videos than just pictures. It’s a great tool to initiate a conversation with your kids. The author even includes little post-it notes with suggestions like pretending to run and moving your arms back and forth, which tie in with the messages in the book.

What I appreciate about this book is that it doesn’t just explain what good and bad pictures are, but also why they can be dangerous. Some kids are curious and want to know all the details, while others may not be as interested. The author caters to both types of kids. She also provides guidance on what to do if they come across an inappropriate picture: turn, run, and tell. These are the same points she emphasizes in her other book.

All in all, I think Good Pictures, Bad Pictures: Junior Edition is a fantastic resource to help you talk to your kids about pornography and what they can do if they encounter it. There aren’t many books out there on this topic, so it’s definitely worth checking out. Alright, hope that helps! Cheers!
