A short overview of this book

A Family is a Family by Sara O’Leary is a fabulous book for helping children to understand that all families are special in many different ways. Books about families are important, as they help children to understand that every family is different and unique, but they have one thing in common – they care for each other. So this is a perfect book for children who may worry that their family is different because they have 2 dads, stepsiblings or raised by a grandmother.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. On my website, I help parents find a better way to talk to their kids about sex. Today, I want to talk about a fantastic book for discussing families with your little ones.

This book is all about different types of families, and it’s especially great because it features a child who is in foster care. At first, they’re a bit hesitant to talk about their family, but as we read through the book, we realize that even though they’re in foster care, they’re still part of a loving family. Isn’t that wonderful?

What I really love about this book is how inclusive it is. It covers every kind of family situation you can think of, and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. Seriously, the pictures are so captivating that my own kids would spend hours examining every detail. They’d get up close and personal with the pages, trying to spot all the little things. It’s such a joy to see their curiosity sparked!

In this book, you’ll find families with parents who have known each other since kindergarten, families with lots of kids and a mom who keeps bringing home new babies, families with two moms who love to sing really loud, and families with lots of grandparents. It covers so many different situations, it’s amazing!

The book also talks about kids who spend time with both mom and dad, blended families, same-sex families, and, of course, it ends with a beautiful story about a foster family. Let me share a little snippet with you.

There was a time when someone saw this foster family all together at the park and asked the foster mom to point out her real children. And you know what she said? She said, Oh, I don’t have any imaginary children. All my children are real. How heartwarming is that?

This book teaches an important lesson: a family is a family, no matter what. It’s all about embracing the diversity that exists in families and helping kids understand and appreciate those differences. Everyone is unique, and that’s totally okay!

So, if you’re looking for a book that normalizes these conversations and celebrates the beauty of diverse families, this is the one for you. Trust me, it’s a gem!

Alright, that’s it for now. Cheers, and happy reading!
