Best children’s books about LGBT families

Talking about same-sex relationships and families with kids can sometimes be tricky, but these children’s books about LGBT families can help with starting the conversation.
Children today are growing up in an increasingly diverse world. Which means that they will make friends with kids who may be a little different to them. These friends might come from a different culture or country. Or they might have a different family to theirs, living with just one parent instead of two. Or their friend might have two mums or two dads, instead of a mum and dad.
The challenge for parents is in teaching our kids to accept and respect differences in people. So we need to talk about the fact that everyone is different and that’s okay.
These children’s books about LGBT families can help with talking about same-sex relationships and families.

Find practical tools to educate kids about sex education in the Sex Ed Shop
Many of the sex education books for teenagers and puberty books will also talk about same-sex attraction and relationships. There are quite a few good children’s books about diversity and inclusion too, that will help with emphasising that everyone is different in some way (and that’s okay).
If you’re looking for a book on a different topic, look at my main list of sex education books for children. It includes over 40+ topics!
You’ll also find more information about sex education on my Sex Education 101 page.
NOTE: Before passing any book to your child or reading it with them, you should read it yourself first. I might think it is a great book for a certain age child or that the information is valuable, but you may disagree. Try to choose books that reflect your values and the messages you want your child to receive.
Children’s books about LGBTQIA+ families
You’ll find an age-specific list of children’s books about LGBTQ families and same-sex families. All of the books on this topic are currently showing.
All of the ages are visible, regardless of whether they’re relevant (or not). If no books appear for your chosen age, then it means there aren’t any relevant books.
To find relevant books for your child’s age, click on their age, and the appropriate books will appear.

If no books appear, there aren’t any books for a child of that age.
