Families Can by Dan Saks

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Families Can by Dan Saks is an inclusive board book for young children that celebrates the different ways a family can be made up. This book is lovely as it celebrates the differences that make each family unique and the similarities and love that connect us all together.

I absolutely love this series of books by Dan Sak and think that all parents should consider having them on their bookshelves.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. On my website, I help parents find a better way to talk to their kids about sex. One thing that makes sex education as a parent a lot easier is books. And today, I’m excited to review a board book called Families Can by Dan Saks and illustrated by Brooke Smart.

This book is great because it tackles the conversations we have with little kids about families. It helps them understand what a family is – a group of people who live together, love each other, and support each other. But here’s the cool part: it also teaches kids that families can be different. As they grow older and go to school or daycare, they might notice that some kids have a mom and a dad, while others live with a grandparent or a foster carer. Some might even have two dads or just one mom or dad. Families can be super diverse!

The book starts off by showing that families can have different activities. Some like to go out and do lots of things, while others prefer to hang out at home and relax. Families can look the same or totally different from each other. Some family members were born in faraway places, while others were born right where they live. Families can have one parent, lots of siblings, or even live in two homes.

The book also gives examples of different types of families. Some have pets, some have brothers or sisters, and some have two dads or two moms. In some families, the oldest member might be a grandparent. But you know what? No matter how a family looks, the book sums it up perfectly: a family is love. And when they’re together, just like the pages in this book, your family is a unique and true story. Your family is beautiful, just like you.

This book is simple and the illustrations are lovely. I’m really pleased to see that it includes lots of diversity. It’s a fantastic resource for starting early conversations with toddlers and three- or four-year-olds about the different types of families out there. And guess what? There are more books like this out there, so you can start building a lovely collection for your children as they grow up. I’ll be reviewing a couple more of these books soon, so stay tuned!

Cheers, and happy reading!
