Book Review

A short overview of this book

What is Sex? A guide for people with Autism, special educational needs and disabilities by Kate E. Reynolds provides an explanation of sex for people with autism and special education needs and disabilities (SEND). It helps readers to understand the physical processes as well as important issues such as consent and sexual safety, helping them to develop positive relationships.

Many people with autism and SEND have or will have intimate relationships. Often sex is alluded to, rather than being carefully explored. This can create confusion around consent, sexual health, and pregnancy, and cause people to turn to dubious online information. This book frankly explains sex so that the reader has a clear understanding of what constitutes sex, knowledge of the proper names for sexual organs and sexual activities, and is aware of the potential physical consequences of having se

Kate E. Reynolds also has other books that you may find helpful.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. On my website, I help parents find better ways to talk to their kids about love, sex, and relationships. Today, I want to review a book called What is Sex? by Kate E. Reynolds. Now, Kate has written some amazing books for kids with autism, so when I stumbled upon this one, I just had to order it. She also has another book about pregnancy, and I’m really excited to see what else she has in store for us.

What is Sex? is a guide specifically designed for people with autism, special educational needs, and disabilities. I love that there’s a focus on inclusivity and accessibility. The book doesn’t use skin tones, which is consistent with their other books like What’s Happening to Ellie? and Things Ellie Likes. They cover topics like puberty, going to the toilet, and even masturbation. They’re also coming out with a book about menopause, which I can’t wait to check out.

Now, let’s dive into the book itself. Right off the bat, you’ll notice that the language used is very direct and explicit. There are no beating around the bush or using fancy words. It’s all straightforward and easy to understand. The book starts by explaining what sex is and how it’s a part of becoming an adult. It also mentions that some people refer to it as sleeping with your partner. It’s important to note that sex should only happen when you want it to happen. Consent is a big topic in the book, emphasizing that you can change your mind and that agreeing once doesn’t mean agreeing every time.

The book goes on to talk about different body types, gender, and the various parts of our bodies. It’s great to see that they cover diverse bodies and even discuss things like buttock hair. These are topics that aren’t often addressed in other books, so it’s refreshing to see them included here. Consent is emphasized again, highlighting that you can’t agree to have sex if you’re drunk, forced, or too scared to say no.

One thing I really appreciate about this book is that it includes same-sex relationships. It’s important for kids to see that love and relationships come in all forms. The illustrations in the book can be quite graphic, so be prepared for that.

Moving on, the book talks about masturbation, how it can be done, and why people might do it. It also covers oral sex and even shows pictures of what it might look like. They discuss foreplay and the importance of using lubricant. Oh, and don’t worry, they do eventually show you how to put on a condom. Phew!

The book explains vaginal and anal sex, including how pregnancy can happen. And of course, they didn’t forget the safe sex page! They talk about using dams, female condoms, and condoms for penises. They also mention that having sex with someone is a big step and that talking to others about it can be helpful.

Overall, What is Sex? is a fantastic little guide that explains the topic in a frank, practical, everyday language. It’s a great resource for parents who want to have open conversations with their kids. I personally loved it so much that I bought it instead of waiting for my library to get it in. Cheers!
