You Know, Sex? Bodies, Gender, Puberty and Other Things by Cory Silverberg

Book Review

A short overview of this book

You Know, Sex? Bodies, Gender, Puberty and Other Things by Cory Silverberg is an inclusive sex education book for tweens and young teens about puberty, sex and gender. This book is grounded in social justice, covering not only the big three of puberty—hormones, reproduction, and development—but also power, pleasure, and how to be a decent human being. It is also racially and ethnically diverse, and is inclusive of disability.

This is a popular book, with the author creating the very first sex education book that was inclusive (What Makes a Baby) and then Sex is a Funny Word. So it is fantastic to finally see a book that talks about puberty and sex. Plus a book that is inclusive for all families.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. This is where I help parents find a better way to talk to their kids about bodies, puberty, sex, and growing up. Today, I want to talk about a book that I’ve been eagerly waiting for. It’s called Sex is a Funny Word by Corey Silverberg.

Corey’s first book, which explained how babies are made and where they come from, was a real game-changer. It was one of the first inclusive books out there, breaking new ground and being really visionary. Then came his second book, What Makes a Baby?—a title I almost forgot for a moment there!

Now, let me tell you about Sex is a Funny Word. It’s a thick, inclusive, and absolutely wonderful book. I have to admit, it’s been sitting in my pile for nearly four months—yikes! But hey, better late than never, right? So, I finally got around to reading it and I’m excited to share my thoughts with you.

Now, I have to be honest, this book is a bit on the pricey side. I paid just under 50 Australian dollars for it, which is quite a lot for a sex education book. But trust me, it’s worth every penny. I know it’s October now, and I got this book back in April, but hey, life gets busy, right?

Let’s talk about the author, Corey Silverberg, and the illustrator, Fiona Smith or Smythe. If you’re familiar with Corey’s previous books, you’ll know what to expect. The illustrations are incredibly inclusive, featuring diverse skin colors, abilities, ethnicities, and body shapes. It’s a beautiful representation of our diverse world.

What sets Sex is a Funny Word apart is the angle it takes. Corey is like a sex educator who goes into schools to teach kids about this stuff. So the book not only covers educational topics but also delves into what’s happening at home with these kids. It’s a great way to bridge the gap between school and home conversations.

Now, let me show you what topics are covered in the book. We’ve got everything from what is sex, bodies, gender, puberty, feelings, consent, communication, touching, relationships, safety, to reproduction. It’s a comprehensive guide that leaves no stone unturned.

I should mention that I believe this is the third book in the series, and I don’t think there’s a fourth one coming out. But hey, things can always change, right? So keep an eye out just in case.

This book is a real treasure. It’s thick, packed with valuable information, and incredibly inclusive. I can understand why it took so long to create. The amount of research and effort that went into it must have been immense. But let me tell you, it was worth it. The information in this book is top-notch.

So, don’t let this book gather dust on your bookshelf. It’s an absolute must-have for any parent looking for an inclusive and educational resource. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Alright, that’s all for now. Cheers!
